College of Business Administration
Master of Science in Accountancy

Admissions Requirements

The Master of Science in Accountancy degree is intended for those who desire a high level of expertise in accounting practice. The degree is intended to meet state requirements necessary to take the Uniform Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination and the professional requirements necessary to take the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and Certified Management Accountant (CMA) examinations.

In addition to the college's admission requiements, students must:

All students entering the Master of Science in Accountancy program are required to have a four-year undergraduate degree (or the foreign equivalent) from an accredited institution. The undergraduate degree may be in any discipline. For students with a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree in accounting from a program accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the M.S. in Accountancy program will require a minimum of 36 semester hours. For students with 1) a B.B.A. or M.B.A. degree in an area other than accounting, 2) a degree in an area other than business administration, or 3) a business degree from a program not accredited by the AACSB, additional business courses, as determined by a graduate advisor, may be necessary.

Candidates must show competence in finite mathematics, calculus, computers, and foundation knowledge in accounting through course work at the college level. If college courses have not been successfully completed in each of these subjects prior to admission, students must include these courses in the degree program. Courses offered at the University of Houston that meet these requirements are MATH 1313, MATH 1314, and DISC 2373. DISC 4381, Quantitative Analysis of Decision Making, may be taken in place of MATH 1313 and 1314 by students who have sufficient background. The prerequisite for MATH 1313 and 1314 or DISC 4381 is college algebra (MATH 1310).

Students must complete 18 hours of graduate accounting courses and 18 hours of non-accounting graduate courses. In addition to the 18 hours of graduate accounting courses, at least 12 hours of accounting beyond the fundamental accounting course(s) (ACCT 2331, ACCT 2332, or ACCT 6331) are required if they have not been taken prior to admission to the program. These foundation courses include ACCT 6376 (Intermediate Accounting I), ACCT 7376 (Intermediate Accounting II), and at least two of the following courses: ACCT 6377 (Cost and Managerial Accounting), ACCT 7330 (Advanced Accounting), ACCT 7336 (Fundamentals Of Federal Taxation), ACCT 7368 (Auditing), and ACCT 7373 (Accounting Information Systems).

Prior completion of the program requirements has no bearing on the admissions process. Students who are missing the math, computer, or the accounting foundation requirements must take them prior to the completion of their program. Program requirement hours are not included in the number of hours required for the degree and may be waived on the basis of previous equivalent college course work.
