Research Centers and Institutes
The Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture offers many opportunities for
students to be involved in classes and research programs which are of special
significance to the community and the profession. These activities are found
within the institutes and centers of the college and include:
- The Center for Historic Architecture focuses on the study of historic
preservation and adaptive use as a means to effect positive change within urban
settings. The center conducts a summer field research program, surveying and
preparing documentation drawings of significant historic buildings.
- The Community Design Resource Center explores innovative housing solutions
which address the special needs of low income and elderly populations. It is a
visible community program that provides worthwhile facilities and involvement
in the immediate university neighborhood. The center's activities frequently
involve interdisciplinary cooperation between the Colleges of Architecture,
Law, Technology, Engineering, Business Administration, the Graduate School of
Social Work, and the Metropolitan Volunteer Program.
- The Computer Design Center, established in 1983, extends its mission beyond
teaching computer literacy to include academic research and practical
investigation of the computer as an architectural design tool, with emphasis
placed on modeling, visualization, and animation using both Macintosh and PC
platforms.
- The Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture is an endowed
center with a focus on research and design studies for life in outer space and
investigations into design for other extraordinary habitats such as Antarctica.
Projects are frequently undertaken with NASA and the aerospace industry.
- The Urban Ecology and Landscape Architecture Center focuses on landscape
architecture and the impact of man-made environments on natural ecosystems with
a view toward sustainability and the reversal of environmental degradation.
