Campus Beautification

When students, faculty, staff, and friends of the university pay their first visit to campus, the work of the UH Entrances and Perimeter Committee ensures that they leave with a good first impression. The 14 members of the committee, led by Josanna Smith, strive to add natural beauty to the campus by creating attractive gardens, plantings, and other physical enhancements.

The committee, which meets every two months, has been busy overseeing a master list of projects drafted in 2001. Many have been completed and the results are readily apparent. Among them are the Cullen Avenue of Trees, which brought 64 live oaks to both sides of Cullen Boulevard, along with refurbished sidewalks and new light posts and banners. Just south of this is another project, the Dena and Guy V. Lewis Azalea Garden, funded in part by a grant from the River Oaks Garden Club. Future plans include creating an azalea trail through campus, completing an antique rose garden near the Moores School of Music, and planting large oleanders and other foliage to screen maintenance barns and utility buildings.

Thanks to the members of this committee, the University of Houston campus looks better each year. To learn more about campus beautification efforts, or to contribute, please contact Nancy Clark, at (713) 743-8873.
