Events

GISO Committee organizes and conducts many events in a year. GISO events draw a lot of volunteer support, participants and audience. Through the events, many GISO and non-GISO members showcase their talents. The events also enables GISO members to put to test their abilities, ideas and skills.

GISO Events
Fresher Orientation A fresh graduate student's basic need, among various other needs, when he/she sets foot in the US and in UH is information. That is precisely what GISO Fresher Orientation provides - from an Indian student's perspective.

In the Fresher Orientation, GISO members provide important information to fresh graduate students about how to survive in US, Houston and at school. The information can be anything important like study plan, do's and dont's to something that is useful in day-to-day life.

The Fresher Orientation program is normally held a few days before the Fall semester officially starts.
Indian Independence Day Celebrations GISO organizes the Indian Independence Day Celebrations on August 15th (US, CST) each year to commemorate the Indian Independence. The event attracts huge gathering. The event normally starts by honoring the Indian National Anthem, honoring the Indian freedom fighters and other notable Indian personalities and a few performances by GISO and non-GISO members. The event concludes with a refreshment and with a genuine feel of integrity!
Parichay Parichay, meaning introduction in Hindi, is an event organized for fresh Indian student to get acquainted with one another and with current Indian students at UH. The event showcases many performances from GISO members and concludes with a refreshment.

Parichay is normally held during mid September each year.
Diwali GISO organizes Diwali, the festival of lights each year to celebrate the triumph of good over evil. Diwali is one of the grand festivals in India, which is celebrated on the day when Lord Rama, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu on earth, defeated and killed Ravanasura, the daemon king on earth, thus putting a stopper to evil.

Diwali is celebrated sometime during October or early November each year.
Anubhav Cup "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy". Going by this witty phrase, GISO organizes Anubhav Cup each year. Anubhav Cup is a Cricket tournament, which attracts Cricket teams from UH and many other universities in and around Houston. The teams compete with each other to advance to the final stages of the tournament and the final winner will be awared the Anubhav Cup at Maitri event

The Anubhav Cup Cricket tournament is normally held a few days before the Maitri event is held.
Maitri Maitri is a cultural event orgnized by GISO. Maitri, in Sanskrit means friendship. Thus, living by it's name, Maitri brings all the GISO members together, strengthening their bond of friendship, to entertain people and to get entertained.

Maitri is normally held during mid Spring semester.
