Roberts Elementary Outdoor Performing Arts Stage
Oran M. Roberts Elementary, located in the Southgate neighborhood of Houston, is a public magnet school for the visual and performing arts. The student body is characterised by a rich ehtnic and cultural diversity. The Graduate Design/Build Studio was charged with providing an outdoor performing arts stage. The projects, sited in the southeast lawn of the campus playground, also functions as a component of the neighborhood park, enhanced for after-school use through the City of Houston's SPARK program. The design consists of a concrete stage platform framed overhead by steel trellises. Through a collaboration with artist Fletcher Mackey, a long bench integrates tiles which are hand painted by the students and families to celebrate Robert's international culture. The project is integrated into the canopy of the surrounding oak trees to shade performers and audience alike. The outdoor stage is designed to offer a generous space to perform drama, music, dancing and gymnastics.
