REPORT FROM AND DISCUSSION WITH THE FACULTY SENATE PRESIDENT:  Steven Craig

Dr. Craig opened the polls for election of the 2007 Senate officers and Committee on Committees.  Also on the ballot were candidates for the Senate Delegate and Alternate to the Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics.
Dr. Craig announced that next year he would be chairing a new Ad Hoc Planning Committee instead of the COC.  He talked about the QEP process, pointing out that there are 3 proposals being considered.  Themed housing, one of the Senate’s QEP proposals, is being discussed with the Vice President for Student Affairs.   A small faculty committee has been formed to talk with Elwyn Lee about the Graduate & Professional Student Housing that is being planned.  The building will likely be 10 stories.  There are plans for a separate building with the first floor being a lecture hall, 2nd floor for classrooms and 3rd floor offices.
Dr. Craig encouraged faculty to respond to the climate survey.  It was noted that the Survey had been sent to 1200 faculty and 326 had responded, the deadline was being extended until December 15.

REPORT FROM AND DISCUSSION WITH THE UH SYSTEM SENIOR VICE CHANCELLOR AND UH SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS:  Don Foss

Dr. Foss reported that (1) enrollment for the Spring was down with the number of doctoral students comparable for last Spring, but Master’s students are down 2% and undergraduate enrollment is down 2.5 %; (2) that any building project, like the Graduate and Professional Student Housing, can use more eyes.   Usually, building projects come up through the Deans and Chairs. (3) the Textbook policy has been circulated to the Deans for comments; (4) The President has signed the Extension of the Probationary Period for Child Birth and/or Adoption Policy and the Extension of the Probationary Period for Emergency Purposes.  The Provost has put these two policies into effect as of now.  (5)  After discussion with the President and Senate Executive Committee, the Provost plans to make August 1 as the default date for beginning new policies.  (6) Deans Review Committees have been formed.
