For ease in reading this handbook the following titles have been shortened as noted:

Chancellor/President: Chancellor of the University of Houston System and President of the University of Houston

Chancellor: Chancellor of the University of Houston System and President of the University of Houston acting in his/her capacity as the head of the UH System.

President: Chancellor of the University of Houston System and President of the University of Houston acting in his/her capacity as the head of the University of Houston.

Provost: Vice Chancellor of the University of Houston System and Senior Vice President of the University of Houston for Academic Affairs and Provost

UH System Reorganization
 

In April of 1995, the University of Houston System Board of Regents voted to restructure the four-university system by combining the positions of Chancellor of the University of Houston System and President of the University of Houston. The combined position was the direct result of an intensive systemwide organization review. Under the new structure each UH System university: UH, UH-Clear Lake, UH-Downtown, and UH-Victoria will maintain its distinct mission.

In the fall of 1996, the Board of Regents unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Arthur K. Smith to the newly created position of UH System Chancellor and UH President.

1997-99 Handbook
 

An addendum to the 1994-96 Faculty Handbook was prepared for release in the fall of 1996. Once the Board of Regents made the decision to restructure the UH System, a complete revision of the handbook was performed.
