SCHOLARSHIP & COMMUNITY
COMMITTEE: GOALS and
DIRECTIONS for 2009
1.
Plan the Scholarship and Community Conference for the Fall 2009.
The
tentative title is "Energy: From Campus to Community and Back”.
Some potential ideas for the conference include: 1) How will wind
energy
benefit the city. 2) Partnerships on Green initiatives. 3) Energy
alternatives,
sustainability. 4) Energy efficient housing. 5) Community
revitalization.
Work with Jim Anderson and the Energy people in the Majors
office. Set a
date as soon as possible and nail down some key speakers.
2.
Develop a Speaker series for Junior Faculty. Partner with
the library and
maybe others to provide opportunity for junior faculty to talk about
their
research and scholarship interests to other UH faculty outside their
normal
environment.
3.
Develop a proposal for an Outstanding Faculty Service Award.
(similar to the
teaching and research awards). Potentially multiple awards, some for
University
Service, and some for Community Service.
4.
Develop a strategy to improve attendance at Fall and Spring Faculty
assemblies.
Some Ideas may include having a guest speaker out side of the
University
(mayor, state rep, etc); Publicize more or differently;
Consider if
having refreshments is feasible? Consider if the time of the
Assembly
should be changed? (Right now have been turned down by Mayor and
President of GHP.)
5.
Explore the possibility of establishing a Faculty Club.
Possibly work
with other groups to develop a survey to faculty on interest.
6.
Provide liaison to Government relations office/Legislature.
Consider
forming a subcommittee to discuss how the Faculty Senate can be more
active in
this regard. Maybe set up letter writing phone call campaigns as
needed. (Have asked Dr. Harrell Rogers to serve as Legislative
Liaison.)
7.
Help organize and plan Faculty Recognition dinners.
(Working with Patsi
Cavareo in the Office of Special Events. The Faculty
Recognition Dinner is on March 5 at the Hilton
Americas. Using the 2008 academic year for the list to be
honored.)
8. Act as
a liaison for Homecoming; MLK day, special events, etc.
9. Retirement
benefits other than financial i.e. library, bookstore, parking, etc.
