The Provost’s Undergraduate Research Scholarship, or the PURS program, offers full-time juniors and seniors a $1000 scholarship to conduct a part-time semester research project under the mentorship of a UH faculty member. The program allows students to attain hands-on experience in their field and enables them to work directly with a faculty member outside of the classroom. The deadline for the spring 2010 program is Friday, November 20th. For more information and to apply, visit PURS online.
The PURS program housed in The Honors College and administered through the Office of Undergraduate Research, but serves undergraduates from all colleges and disciplines at the University of Houston. The Office of Undergraduate Research is dedicated to helping undergraduate students find research opportunities and creative projects conducted with the guidance of UH professors. UH embraces the mission of providing a broad range of educational programs and services at the undergraduate level to ensure student success, which includes the participation of undergraduate students in research activities.
There are more research opportunities available through additional programs coordinated through the office. These programs encourage students to get hands-on experience, form strong mentor relationships with faculty members and make a difference in their fields while they are still undergraduates. Among these programs is the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program, which provides a $2800 stipend to undergraduates conducting a full-time summer research project. Another is the Senior Honors Thesis program, a 6-hour capstone program for graduating seniors. Explore more opportunities with the Office of Undergraduate Research.
