Off to the Races
Those who love life in the fast lane can choose between horses, hot rods and hounds.
When Houstonians feel the need for speed, they have a host of racing options to choose from.
For those who like to play the ponies, the Sam Houston Race Park is a Class I track featuring seasonal racing of Thoroughbreds and American Quarter Horses, as well a simulcast system broadcasting races from around the globe. Musical acts also perform at the park. Artists ranging from the Charlie Daniels Band to Quiet Riot have entertained there.
If playing the pups is more your speed, the world’s largest greyhound racing operation, Gulf Greyhound Park, features dining, cocktails and three air-conditioned viewing levels. This facility is open year round, rain or shine.
Racing fans that prefer the roar of an engine to a greyhound’s bark will definitely want to visit Houston Raceway Park. This 440-acre track seats 30,000 fans and hosts events sponsored by the National Hot Rod Association. Among the big races to take place here is the Powerade Drag Racing Series.
