Social Work and GIS


At the Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW), Dr. Monit Cheung and Dr. Patrick Leung explored and evaluated various innovative tools to enhance teaching effectiveness. UH Social Science Data Librarian, Mr. Joshua Been, and Social Work Librarian, Ms. Irene Ke, have been assisting faculty to use Geospatial Information System (GIS) to prepare teaching contents with evidence support. A doctoral teaching fellow, Mr. Richard Wagner, speaks about the advocacy role of a social work faculty when GIS data are used in teaching.


Curriculum Mapping in Social Work


At the University of Houston, Dr. Monit Cheung and Dr. Sarah Narendorf have been working on its curriculum mapping as a Graduate College of Social Work Teaching Innovation Project. Curriculum mapping is a team-approach process that helps faculty describe the entire curriculum after analyzing various components of knowledge, skills and values in social work. It aims to find the required areas that prepare students for their professional practice and to assist faculty in delivering course contents that are aligned with the Council on Social Work Education re-accreditation standard. .


Supporting Student Learning Through Hands-on Access to Augmentative and Alternative Communication Technology


The Communication Sciences and Disorders Department at the University of Houston has initiated a program to promote hands-on learning of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) equipment to support individuals with severe communication disorders.


Creating Hybrid Art History Courses as a TIP Project

Dr. Shibley's Keynote Presentation

The University of Houston Teaching Integration Pedagogy Project is a partnership between the BFA Theatre Education program, and Houston Independent School District. Students document and reflect on pedagogical practice in a hands-on internship through use of technology.


Dr. Robin's MOOC Presentation


Dr. Bernard Robin, Associate Professor in the College of Education, presented along with graduate students, Erwin Handoko and George Zhao, on lessons they learned while creating one of the university’s first MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course). This presentation was given at the UH System Innovative Teaching and Learning Symposium on April 24, 2015.


Teaching Social Work Practice in a Virtual Reality Clinical Lab


The University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work has established its first online social work clinic for teaching clinical skills in a virtual reality (VR) environment. With a free online program called Second Life, Dr. Monit Cheung guided a doctoral student in a teaching mentoring project to design the UH-GCSW’s VR Clinical Lab. Through the support from the University’s Teaching Innovation Program, this video presents the development of the lab and explains how MSW students can use avatars anonymously to present real-life clinical situations for practice purposes.

The Joint Undergraduate Mentorship Program (JUMP) is an innovative project that aims to promote increased retention and completion rates as well as cultivates professionalism and leadership skills for undergraduate students through a student mentoring program.
