Innovative Teaching and Learning Symposium
On April 24th, 114 faculty, staff, and graduate students from the UH System gathered to attend the first ITLS held at UH-Main campus. This year’s event focused on the tracks of quality, mobile, accessible, and secure learning Highlights included a keynote on blended course research by Dr. Ike Shibley of Penn State Berks, as well as a hands-on workshop by Dr. Shibley in which faculty worked through the preliminary steps of creating a blended course. UH System Security and Registrar administrators also held a panel discussion on how to keep student and other sensitive data confidential. Most importantly, faculty from across the system presented to other faculty about what they are doing in their physical and virtual classrooms to benefit students. To learn more, click this link.

New FDIS Director – Dr. Teresa Acosta
Ms. Tammy Hoskings is happily retired after leading the Faculty and Departmental Instructional Support (FDIS) team for 15 years. All of us acknowledge her great contributions to UH and wish her happiness, success, and good health as she begins her new adventure.
In the meantime, we welcome our new director, Dr. Teresa Acosta. Most of you know Dr. Acosta well. She has worked in FDIS for 10 years, 5 of those years as the Senior Instructional Designer. Her professionalism, strengths, and achievements are known to us. We look forward to serving UH under her guidance and support.

Active Learning Classroom
Starting Fall 2014, University of Houston established the first Active Learning Classroom (ALC) in Cougar Place. This classroom allows the instructor to move beyond the traditional lecture format and engage students in participatory active learning activities. Last Fall, 6 instructors teaching 8 courses in this classroom. From the survey, the student survey indicated that students unanimously liked the interaction and the “collective cooperation” that this room afforded. New Expanded Blackboard Instructional Support Services
University of Houston has expanded instructional support services for Blackboard. UH instructors and TAs will be able to access basic Blackboard Support via phone, email, live chat, or online, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year.
