Project FAQ's

Q.  Why was PeopleSoft software selected?

A.  PeopleSoft is first in this business, with the most functionality of any competing product. Over one hundred and fifty institutions of higher education are moving in the same direction as UHS, having purchased PeopleSoft software. To maintain its position as an institution that delivers quality services to its students, faculty and employees, UHS cannot afford to stand still.

Q.  PeopleSoft implementations often seem to run over cost and over budget. What is UHS doing to avoid this?

A.  UHS is very aware of these events and has taken many steps to ensure that the difficulties experienced at many other campuses are not repeated here. UHS has hired an experienced and respected consulting partner to assist us through this process. The progress of the project is monitored weekly by UHS executives to ensure that the project is on schedule, and UHS was careful not to be the first institution on the 'bleeding edge' of technology in this area.

Q.  PeopleSoft seems to be losing momentum as an organization, what is happening?

A.  For the past three or four years, PeopleSoft has been riding a 'niche' market, experiencing a wave of growth that we all read about with envy. It should come as no surprise that the niche market is beginning its maturity cycle. This phenomenon is experienced by all fast-growth organizations and is not an indication of PeopleSoft's viability as a reputable and substantive software development organization. This maturity curve has been anticipated by all of us for the past several years.

Q.  What is a 'vanilla' implementation? Why should this be a goal?

A.  A 'vanilla' implementation is one which minimizes changes made to the delivered software. This approach reduces expense, both in the initial implementation and in future upgrades.

The term 'vanilla' causes some concern among many individuals, faculty as well as administrative users. What is sometimes overlooked is the 'table driven' design of the PeopleSoft system that supports hundreds of design considerations without a single software modification. These tables allow us to 'customize' the PeopleSoft systems to many of our needs, without violating the 'vanilla' guideline.

It goes without saying that we will meet all state mandated reporting guidelines and we will meet all mission critical business needs of the campuses as we move forward.

Q.  The budget for this project seem excessive, why is it so expensive?

A.  The budget for this project needs to be viewed in perspective. A perspective that accounts for the fact that we are improving the quality of over seventeen core application areas, on five campuses, over a period of five years. From this perspective, the cost of each of these service improvements does not seem as dramatic.

Q.  What systems are affected by this project?

A.  UHS has purchased seventeen 'modules' within the Finance, Human Resources and Student Administration areas. These will be implemented in a series of 'releases' over a period of years.

The implementation schedule is available on the Planning page of this website. Additional details for each application area are available on the Finance, Human Resources and Student Administration pages of this website.

Q.  How many jobs will be lost because of the project?

A.  This project is not about losing jobs, it is about improving the quality of our student, faculty and administrative services without increasing our future needs out of scale with other institutions, those other institutions with whom we compete to attract students.

Q.  How can I get more information about the project?

A.  Feel free to e-mail the FAST Project Office with your questions regarding the project at fast@uh.edu

Q.  When will Web-based Registration be available?
