As the fall semester gets under way, Facilities Planning and Construction is completing six major construction projects:
Cougar Village II is a residential facility consisting of approximately 274 two-bedroom shared bath units, approximately 36 individual units for resident assistants, and related amenities. The project is the second phase of two similar residential facilities to be located along Wheeler Street at the southern edge of the UH campus. Each student bedroom will accommodate two beds for a total capacity of 1,144 beds. The seven-story building was designed by KSQ Architects and Brave Architecture and constructed by Austin Commercial with a total gross square footage of 287,872.
Cougar Place is a student housing facility consisting of two four-story residential wings organized around two connecting quads. A separate but connect¬ed commons building contains reception, classrooms and common living and learning areas intended to provide student gathering space and academic support for an enhanced residential life experience. The new facility has 799 student beds and is designed to house sophomore and other upper class-level students. The 318,000-gross-square-foot facility was designed by PageSoutherlandPage using green/sustainable principles and was constructed by SpawGlas.
The Welcome Center Student Parking Garage contains approximately 1,500 parking spaces, measuring approximately 500,000 gross square feet on four parking levels. It was designed by Morris Architects and constructed Tellepsen. It is located immediately south of the Welcome Center Parking Garage and east of Moody Towers at the corner of Wheeler and Calhoun. This garage will primarily serve the growing student residential corridor along Wheeler Street.
The addition to the Central Plant adds 8,000 square feet to the existing building with a total project gross square footage of 15,776. It was designed by Shah Smith and Associates and constructed by Vaughn Construction. The expansion accommodates three new chillers and a new office suite for the plant located on the ground floor. The project also includes the purchase and installation of three new low NOx high efficiency boilers, replacement of all four cooling towers, and the addition of one new cooling tower. A grant was received from Green Mountain Energy for the installation of a solar panel array on the roof of the addition. The panels can just barely be seen from the ground, but they are expected to produce enough energy to supply power to the 4,000-square-foot office suite.
The Lamar Fleming Building was renovated to address major life safety issues including the addition of sprinkler and fire alarm systems as well as converting old lab space into office space. The 117,155-gross-square-foot project was designed by Lord Aeck Sargent and constructed by Vaughn Construction.
UH Victoria Jaguar Suites is a suite-style residence hall at the University of Hous¬ton-Victoria has 216 beds, all with four private bed¬rooms measuring 9 feet by 12 feet, a shared living space and kitchenette, and two baths. The building features a multi-purpose room, two large study rooms, computer labs and small group study rooms on each floor, a large fitness room, commons areas with televisions on each floor and two elevators. Additional amenities include Wi-Fi throughout the building, laundry facilities on each floor and a pool. The 81,721-square-foot project was designed by Smith and Company and constructed by Vaughn Construction.
