Chemical Waste Disposal
The University generates many different kinds of chemicals, much of which is defined as hazardous per the EPA. We are required to comply with the hazardous chemical waste regulations and we have a cradle to grave responsibility for hazardous waste generated on campus. Details of the hazardous waste program can found in the university’s Hazardous Waste Manual. As noted in Hazardous Waste Management section of this web site, EHS requires everyone involved in the management of chemical waste on campus to complete the on-line Hazardous Waste procedures course which outlines the key procedures to maintain compliance in their specific area. Disposal of regulated chemical waste down the drain or via evaporation is prohibited.
Whenever possible we urge members of the UH community to recycle or reuse chemicals rather than disposing of them. EHS operates a CHEM-SWAP program free of charge for the campus. If you have a chemical that could be recycled or reused please fill out a CHEM SWAP Form and send it to EHS. You can view a list of our available chemicals for swap.
