Applying for Certification

Eligibility for Texas Educator Certificate

The University of Houston COE will only recommend you after you have met the following requirements:

Undergraduates (Classroom Teacher Certificate)

  • Degree plan on file
  • Course substitutions documented by petition and filed with the appropriate department
  • Completion of Student Teaching or have the Aide Exemption on file
  • Degree conferred
  • Successful completion of all TExES exams required for chosen certification area (minimum score 240)

Post Baccalaureate/Graduate Students (Classroom Teacher Certificate only OR with Masters)

  • Must have a PB certification plan on file
  • Completion of all certification plan coursework
  • Completion of Student Teaching or have approved full-time teacher experience in approved accredited school documented through a teacher service record
  • Successful completion of all TExES exams required for chosen certification area (minimum score 240)

Graduate Students (Professional Certification)

  • Must have a certification plan on file
  • Completion of all certification plan coursework
  • Master’s degree
  • A Texas teaching certificate
  • Have approved full-time teacher experience  in approved accredited school documented through a teacher service record
  • Superintendent certification requires a valid Principal certificate
  • Successful completion of TExES exam required for chosen certification area (minimum score 240)

Applying for Texas Educator Certificate

If you have not already initiated your TEAL account for testing you will need to do so.  Please see the Educator Certification Online System instructions.

Obtaining a Copy of Your Certificate

Virtual Certificate- Official Certificate Record: The virtual certificate found online is the official certificate record. Effective April 1, 2009, hard copies of the certificate will no longer be automatically printed and mailed to the certificate holder after submitting a certificate application. The certificate application will have a field where the individual may request a hard copy. To print the virtual certificate, the individual can login to his/her TEA account at http://tea.texas.gov/
