Health professor Norma Olvera shares healthy eating tips for Thanksgiving.

With Thanksgiving temptations around the corner, the BOUNCE healthy lifestyle program at the University of Houston College of Education offers tips to enjoy a healthier holiday. Norma Olvera, executive director of BOUNCE and a professor of health at the College, urges taking a balanced approach: Enjoy the day with family and friends while also making healthy choices.

Here are six tips for having a healther Thanksgiving:

  1. Savor the flavor: Eating fast often leads to overeating. Remember to chew slowly and enjoy your food

  2. Serve a variety of salads and vegetables.

  3. Be grateful without being "plate-full." It's OK to say "no thank you" once your hunger is satisfied.

  4. Keep moving and stay active. Be adventurous! Explore the city or sign up to participate in a Turkey Trot.

  5. Swap for lighter turkey meat. Meet your nutritional goals by swapping foods or ingredients for healthier versions.

  6. Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day will help increase your energy level and metabolism.

Have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!
