COE Hosts Second Annual Science Fair Seminar

Second Annual Science Fair SeminarOn September 19, 2015 the College of Education hosted the 2nd Annual Science Fair Seminar in preparation of the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH). The seminar hosted teachers, students and parents from the Houston area to learn about administering and participating in a successful science fair at their respective schools.

When asked about why he wanted to participate in the science fair, student Rehmon Memon said “I liked being able to research something that is interesting to me and solving how it works all on my own.”

The seminar gave 7th-12th grade students, parents, teachers, and administrators an in-depth view of the expectations and components that are experienced at the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston.

“By participating in the science fair kids are able to go through the process of problem solving and persevere when things don’t go as planned. These lessons go beyond academics, these are life lessons that students just can’t learn in the classroom,” said Terri Berry, Secondary Science Coordinator at Clear Creek ISD.

Educator participants were able to receive continuing professional education credits towards their certification requirements by interacting with students and their science fair projects as well as hearing about the science fair expectations of a SEFH Teacher of the Year.

Participants obtained updates on rules and guidelines for both the scientific review committee and the display and safety committee.  They also learned about the new electronic registration system; how to navigate the new SEFH website; how to successfully host a science fair; and heard viewpoints from both the place and special awarding judges.

The Science and Engineering Fair of Houston will take place on February 27 and 28, 2016 at the University of Houston (UH) giving students, parents, and teachers the experience of a Tier 1 research environment. On Sunday, February 28, SEFH will host “Public Day” from 9:00am – 12:00pm which allows all community members to view presentations.   The SEFH Award Ceremony will take place at 1:30pm in the UH Cullen Performance Hall.

The Science and Engineering Fair is in need of volunteers for various tasks during the fair as well as degreed individuals who are willing to serve as judges who can inspire and interact with students that are passionate about STEM research. The Science and Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH) is a non-profit educational organization, supervised by a board of directors and sponsored by the University of Houston; the University of Houston Downtown; the Engineering, Science & Technology Council of Houston; Consumer Energy Alliance; and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. SEFH is a member of the INTEL International Science Engineering Fair.  Collaborating with these stakeholders along with an exemplary team of SEFH committee members, educators, sponsors, and volunteers is a lifetime opportunity continuing to support and inspire 7th-12th grade students in their STEM research.
