Roberta Nutt Co-Authors Book Chapter in Handbook of Psychology of Women

Roberta NuttDepartment of Psychological, Health, & Learning Sciences (PHLS) clinical professor, Roberta Nutt has co-authored a chapter in the soon-to-be-published Handbook of Psychology of Women.

The two volumes, set to be published by the American Psychological Association (APA), will represent the latest knowledge regarding the psychological development of women, including information on their stresses and problems, therapeutic techniques beneficial to women, and other important research and practice issues. The texts will provide a thorough resource for practitioners, researchers, and educators.

Nutt’s chapter will focus on gender bias in the diagnosis and psychotherapeutic treatment of women across time. She skillfully analyzes a number of current therapeutic orientations, and suggests ways the integration of feminist principles could make these orientations more gender fair to both female and male clients. Nutt states that the information garnered while researching and writing the chapter will have an impact on how she teaches and moves forward with other scholarly projects.

Nutt has always been a strong proponent for researching issues relevant to women in psychology. In 2015, she was awarded the CWP Distinguished Leadership Award by the American Psychological Association’s Committee on Women Psychology (CWP). The CWP noted that Nutt’s work made great strides in ensuring that women receive equity as members of the psychological community and as consumers of psychological services.

Nutt joined the faculty at the University of Houston as the Training Director of the Counseling Psychology program in January 2010. She teaches courses in supervision and consultation, clinical interventions, gender issues, and practicum. Prior to coming to the University of Houston, she served on the faculty of Texas Woman's University for 31 years including as founder and Training Director of their Counseling Psychology program. She also served for two years as the Director of Professional Affairs for the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards in Montgomery, Alabama before coming to Houston.
