Coursework Requirements

The M.Ed. Counseling Program - School Track consists of at least 42 semester credit hours to fulfill the course requirements for school counselor preparation. The 42 hour program includes a common College of Education core of 6 semester hours in the areas of human development and inquiry, 33 semester hours of core counseling courses, 6 hours of practicum in a school district and at least 3 semester hours of advisor-approved elective courses.

College Core Requirements

The College core requires one course from each foundation for a total of six   credits. These courses correspond to the core courses specified for all masters degree programs in the College of Education.

For students in the Master's Counseling Program - School Track, the following are required:

Human Growth/Learning

  • EPSY 6330: Human Growth and Development

Inquiry

  • EPSY 6310: Introduction to Educational Research

Core Counseling Requirements (33 hours)

All students complete the following "core" counseling courses:

  • EPSY 6325: Theories of Counseling
  • EPSY 6343: Legal and Ethical Issues in Counseling
  • EPSY 6397: Atypical Growth and Development
  • EPSY 6315: Career Counseling
  • EPSY 6352: Assessment in Educational Psychology
  • EPSY 6391: Introductory Laboratory in Counseling Processes
  • EPSY 6335: Introduction to Group Counseling Theory
  • EPSY 6370: Introduction to Cross-Cultural Counseling
  • EPSY 7393: Internship and Practicum (two semesters for a total of six hours in a school district)
  • EPSY 7326 Counseling in Schools

Elective Counseling Courses (minimum 3 hours)

Students select one or more elective courses in consultation with their academic advisor and/or the program coordinator. Courses may be selected from the following list or from courses that are offered in the Department of Psychological, Health & Learning Sciences or the Department of Psychology.
