Dr. Maxwell joined the UH team in January 2012 and provides leadership, strategic vision, organization and administrative oversight of campus-wide programs, services, and operations for the following departments and functional initiatives/areas: University Career Services, Assessment and Strategic Planning, Communications and Marketing, Student Success Initiatives, Academic and Faculty Collaborations, Advancement, Emergency Management, Student Housing Initiatives, Urban Experience Program, and Student Affairs Committees. He assists the vice chancellor/vice president for Student Affairs and Enrollment Services with executive administrative support for student affairs units in the University of Houston System.

Dr. Maxwell leads the Division’s involvement, in partnership with Academic Affairs, the Foundations of Excellence process through the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence.  He is also chair of the Division’s Student Employment Work Group in partnership with the Office of Human Resources. He previously chaired and/or co-chaired the Greek Life Task Force, the Retention Work Group, and the Programming Sub-Committee of the UHAA’s Transition Committee.

Over the past 28 years, Dr. Maxwell previously worked at Syracuse University, the University of Arizona, Western Illinois University and Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). He is involved in Student Affairs professional associations and is the past two-term national president of the Association of College Unions International and served a three-year term as the chairperson of the Association’s Educational Research Fund. Currently he is a member of ACUI, TACUSPA – Texas Association of College & University Student Personnel Administrators, ACPA – College Student Educators International, and NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. Dr. Maxwell is a member of NASPA’s AVP Steering Committee and is the recent recipient of the James E. Scott Outstanding Mid-Level Student Affairs Professional Award from NASPA Region II.

Dr. Maxwell is an active presenter locally, regionally and nationally on student affairs advancement/fund-raising, student affairs assessment, leadership, multiculturalism, Greek Life, supervision, and student unions and construction. He has served on multiple program review/assessment teams for student unions, student activities, and fraternity and sorority life. Dr. Maxwell is a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and serves locally on the Board of Trustees of the St. Stephen’s Episcopal School Houston.

Dr. Maxwell is a graduate of Syracuse University with a bachelor’s degree in Personnel and Industrial Relations and the University of Miami with a master’s degree in Higher Educational Leadership. Dr. Maxwell received his doctorate in Higher Education and Student Affairs from Indiana University and his research interest include campus ecology, creating purposeful space, and post occupancy evaluations.
