Non-Voting Student Representatives –
Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board

The Texas Legislature has established six (6) non-voting student representative positions. The first is a position with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. This position is open to undergraduate and graduate students with a 2.5 GPA or higher. The UH Student Government Association (SGA) will recommend up to five (5) candidates for this position to the Chancellor who will recommend at least two UH System applicants to the Governor. Term begins June 1, 2009 through May 31, 2010. Applications should be received by SGA by November 14, for full consideration.

The other five (5) non-voting student representatives are with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Advisory Committees which meet 3-6 times a year. The advisory committees are:

1.      Apply Texas Advisory Committee (reviews the Texas common application)
2.      Distance Education Advisory Committee (reviews distance education policy)
3.      Financial Aid Advisory Committee (reviews Texas financial aid policies)
4.      Undergraduate Education Advisory Committee (reviews higher education)
5.      Graduate Education Advisory Committee (reviews graduate education in Texas)

The first four (4) committee positions are open to freshmen, sophomores and juniors with a 2.5 GPA or higher; only graduate students are eligible for the Graduate Education Advisory Committee. There will be up to two (2) nominees from each Texas Higher Education institution for each of the advisory committee positions.  A committee chaired by the Vice President for Student Affairs will make recommendations to the President.

Hard copies of this information can be obtained from the Student Government Office (UC Underground  Rm 57A), the Dean of Students Office (UC Rm 252 ) and the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs (E. Cullen Rm 114). All completed applications must be submitted to one of these offices by noon, November 14, 2008.  Applicants selected for nomination should be prepared to complete an Office of the Governor Appointment Application.
