2013-2014 Student Handbook

University Services

  • The University of Houston Libraries offer a variety of services to students attending classes on campus and those studying off campus through the University's distance education programs. The Libraries consist of the M.D. Anderson Library (the central library), the O'Quinn Law Library, and the Conrad N. Hilton Library. The M.D. Anderson Library has three branch libraries: the Music Library, the Weston A. Pettey Optometry Library, and the William R. Jenkins Architecture and Art Library. Our online library catalog provides information about the collections of the University of Houston Libraries and the UH-Downtown and the UH-Clear Lake libraries. The catalog is available on workstations located throughout the Libraries or through any computer with Internet access.

A network of online databases provides access to a vast array of information including indexes to journal article citations and abstracts, full-text articles, full-text books, and Internet resources. These databases are available to anyone inside the Libraries; current students, faculty, and staff can also access these databases from their home or office through the Library website: http://info.lib.uh.edu.

The newest addition to the Libraries collections is the Digital Library which showcases digital collections of materials documenting the history of the University of Houston, City of Houston, and State of Texas, as well as other historically and culturally significant materials related to the University's teaching and research mission.

In addition to our electronic resources, the Libraries' collections include books, journals, U.S. and State of Texas government publications, and newspapers from around the world. Our Special Collections, located on the second floor of the M.D. Anderson Library, include rare books, valuable literary manuscripts, historical documents, materials relating to the history of the University of Houston, and the Women's Archives Research Center.

The Learning Commons, located in the M.D. Anderson Library, offers library users flexible and inviting spaces for both collaborative and individual work, resources for developing presentation projects, enhanced access to sophisticated computing technology and advanced applications, improved options for reserving equipment, and greater responsiveness to technical questions. The Learning Commons also offers a professional-quality recording studio, large screen monitors for group work, and small group study rooms.

Librarians are available to help all users with their research and information needs. For more information, please visit or call any of the UH Libraries or use the Library website.
