UEP is designed to simultaneously address the needs of the underrepresented student population and the changing dynamics of the American workforce. The program prepares students for the workforce by identifying ways for the students to combine educational opportunities with valuable internship experiences.
Participants are selected on the basis of their demonstrated or potential ability for campus leadership, community service, and academic achievement.
The selection process includes consideration of the following: an application, an essay, an interview with both candidates and their parents or guardians, demonstrated financial need, and exceptional life challenges in pursuing higher education. Participants must be full-time, degree-seeking UH students who contractually agree to abide by the terms of the program and participate in all evaluation activities.
