This schedule will be continuously updated as events are added. Family Weekend is scheduled for Friday, October 11th-13th, 2019.

Friday, October 11

  • 8:00am – 8:45am

    Cycle with Eve, Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, Multipurpose room #4
    The Campus Recreation fitness program offers over 50 different group fitness classes a week to help your students get involved, stay in shape, and feel great! We would like to extend you the same opportunity to participate in our licensed programs. This group cycling class is designed for all fitness levels. It involves various cycling drills that offer an exhilarating cardiovascular workout. Sponsored by Campus Recreation.

    Family Weekend Check-in and Family Headquarters, Student Center South - Bayou City Room
    All registered participants should check in to pick up your packets, including the Guide to Family Weekend, wristbands, tickets and other goodies! Stop by this location anytime you need assistance or just want to take a break. Sponsored by The Dean of Students Office. **All families are strongly encouraged to check-in on Friday!

    Drop-in Breakfast, Cougar Village 2, Lobby
    Student Housing and Residential Life welcome the opportunity to connect with Cougar parents. Stop by to grab some coffee and breakfast and you can connect with other parents in a casual no agenda setting. SHRL will have materials available about the new Quadrangle opening in Fall 2020.     Join University Career Services to learn about exploring related pathways to success, enhancing your students’ resume and cover letter, and practice interviewing skills for their job/internship search.     Visit M.D. Anderson Library, M.D. Anderson Library
    Visit the M.D. Anderson Library to see the space students voted “Best Place to Study” in 2015 and 2016. Chat with library staff about the technology, services, and study spaces available to students, and explore library exhibits. A guided tour of the building will be offered at 11am. Stop by anytime from 10am to 12pm to pick up brochures and free giveaways.

    Encourage your student to broaden their horizons! Find out about Learning Abroad opportunities available to students – study, intern, research, teach, or volunteer – and expand their cultural competency, communication skills, and career potential all while earning college credit. This high energy workout challenges beginner and elite athletes alike.     Student Health Center Open House featuring FREE Flu Shots, Health Building 2, Room 2005
    What better way to keep your student healthy and successful this academic year than to get them vaccinated against influenza. Free flu shots will be available to UH students (18 and older) with valid ID at the University of Houston Student Health Center. Available while supplies last. Picture ID required. Find out more about services we offer: General Medical Clinic, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, Women’s Health, Men’s Health, Lab and Pharmacy Services. A student enrolled in the UH endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan may receive the flu shot with no out-of-pocket cost.

    The college experience is fun but also a stressful time for both students and family. This workshop explores ways to manage the necessary balance between supporting your student while providing the independence that is critical for their success in college. If you are unsure how to support your student because either you didn’t attend college or this is the first of your children to attend college then this session will be of great support to you.     The UH LGBTQ Resource Center and Women and Gender Resource Center (WGRC) invites families and students to the centers to meet the staff, visit the space, and learn about our resources and services related to gender equity, gender diversity, LGBTQIA+ student support and more. We will have light refreshments and activities.

    Celebrating Inclusivity and Diversity at UH, Center for Diversity and Inclusion-Student Center South B12 (first floor to the left of Starbucks)

    AURA Contemporary Ensemble: Colony, Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston (MATCH)
    AURA Contemporary Ensemble and Psophonia Dance Company presents Colony, a collaborative performance depicting the idea of a bee colony through music and dance. Tickets for this show are $15 adults/$12 seniors/$10 students and staff and can be purchased online. This performance is supported by the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center.

    UH Art & Architecture Tour, Courtyard in front of Moores School of Music by Winged Woman Sculpture
    Join Architecture Center Houston for an exploration of art, architecture and campus design on the University of Houston’s main campus. Works by Frank Stella, Jim Love, William King, and The Art Guys are found within the context of campus and buildings designed by notable architects such as Phillip Johnson, Alfred C.     Guided tours of Amie Siegel: Medium Cool and art-making for the whole family. Bring your imagination and wear clothes that are suited to making art. Starting with a free guided tour of the Blaffer exhibition Amie Siegel: Medium Cool. This family-friendly afternoon of art-making will take its cue from the innovative works on view to explore the memory contained in materials and objects. We'll supply guidelines, materials, encouragement, and refreshments throughout.

A multitude of activities will be going-on so pick and choose what you and your family would like to participate in or just sit back and relax over good conversation and food.     Campus Community Garden, Corner of Cullen and Wheeler in the park
    The Campus Community Garden at the University of Houston teaches students how to garden organically while giving back to the community by providing healthy produce to local food banks. Participants may sample food from the garden, receive a tour and brief history of the garden and have the opportunity to learn the “ins-and-outs” of managing a garden including weeding, planting, seeding and harvesting of the produce. Participants will gain a better understanding of agricultural sustainability and receive some fresh herbs to take home to remember this experience! Sponsored by The Office of Sustainability

Amie Siegel: Medium Cool
Through October 12, 2019
Hours: Tuesday—Saturday (10-5), Thursday (10-8)
Over the last decade, artist Amie Siegel has created engulfing, carefully researched works exploring a breadth of themes including history, psychoanalysis, economics, and the global trade in art and artifacts. In the exhibition Medium Cool, the Blaffer Art Museum features three recent works by Siegel: Dynasty, 2017, an installation centered on a fragment of pink marble from Trump Tower; Fetish, 2016, a video unveiling the annual nighttime cleaning of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud’s practice rooms and personal archeological collection; and Quarry, 2015, a video following the production cycle of marble facades, from their origins in underground mines to their use in high-rise multimillion-dollar model apartments. Siegel has also made a new series of marble-dust paintings at the Vermont facility where much of Quarry was shot.

Add a challenge to your Family Weekend and enjoy an afternoon of fun on our 53ft. climbing wall! Parents, students, siblings, and friends are all invited to test their climbing skills. Never climbed? Don’t worry- our experienced staff will teach you everything you need to know.

Parents and families are invited to utilize our state-of-the-art recreation center. Stop by 4500 University Drive to participate in one of our premier group fitness classes, play a game of badminton or racquetball and enjoy many of our other amenities. Including an open invitation to 2 on 2 open rec basketball tournament in which the winners will receive a championship t-shirt.

Experience what it means for you and your family to be informed on the world of health and fitness. A certified personal trainer will be available to answer and general health and fitness questions, provide fitness zone orientation to get you better acquainted with our top of the line equipment, help with exercise technique and provide FREE health assessments that focus on heart rate training zones, level of body fat and overall level of fitness.

Family Pool Time, Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, Outdoor Leisure Pool
Friday - Saturday 12:00pm-7:30pm
Even though it’s October, Houston can still be HOT! If your family needs to cool off, take some time to enjoy our beautiful outdoor leisure pool complete with slides, and waterfall. A perfect time for the younger siblings who may just want to have some fun in the sun. Lifeguards will be on duty, children under the age of 18 must have a parent present.
