Community Action Break

Thank you for your interest in CAB 2014 – All events are full. Please join us next year!


CAB (Community Action Break) is a way for students to take a part of their Spring Break and give back to the community, while meeting other UH students and having a good time.  In 2014 we will offer service projects Monday through Friday March 10th – 13th. Then Friday is a fun day!  Any student who volunteered twice is invited to join us for a day at the Houston Livestock Show and enjoy the carnival, food, rides and more!

Monday March 10th

Join us for some time in the garden!  Monday’s volunteering event will be held at Harry Holmes Healthy Harvest garden in Sunnyside alongside with Urban Harvest where volunteers will help the garden leaders with large and small garden projects. Clean-up, planting, watering, composting and more!  You will meet and work with residents from the neighborhood that benefits from this garden and learn about the issue of food deserts and the need for community gardens.

Time: 9:30AM – 1:30PM
Location: 4646 Brinkley St. Houston, TX 77051
Day of Volunteer: Meet in front of the University Center at 9:00AM.  Dress code: Casual & Comfortable clothing for outdoor gardening. It is advised, but optional, to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and bug spray. BRING WATER. Garden gloves will be provided for volunteers.  A light picnic lunch will be provided.

Tuesday March 11th

Are you interested in health and wellness and working with kids?  This is a 3 part activity.  Our time will be split between playing games and teaching healthy tips to a nearby after-school program, hosted by Agape Development Ministries and assisting in their community garden / facility. We will meet on campus at noon to plan healthy fun and games for the kids. Then assist with the garden / facility from 2pm – 4pm and finally work with the after school kids program from 4pm – 5:15pm. We would return to campus at 5:30pm

Location: 6401 Calhoun Rd, Houston, TX 77021
Day of Volunteer: We will meet in the University Center (room to be announced) at Noon. Please eat beforehand or bring your lunch with you! At 1:40pm we will leave for Agape Development.  Wear casual clothes suitable to being outside, gardening and playing with kids! If you have favorite games please bring those ideas! We will return to campus at 5:30pm

Wednesday March 12th

Community clean up and planting day! We will be helping out the Southeast Houston Transformation Alliance (SEHTA) in the garden at the Park at Palm Center and surrounding area. We will have a picnic lunch and learn about the Third Ward and SEHTA’s role in its redevelopment.

Time: Tentative 10am – 3pm
Location: Palm Center (Third Ward) location
Day of Volunteering: Meet in front of the University Center at 9:30am. Dress code: Casual & Comfortable clothing for outdoor gardening and getting dirty! It is advised, but optional, to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and bug spray. BRING WATER. Garden gloves will be provided for volunteers. A light picnic lunch will be provided.

Thursday March 13th

Join us bright and early to volunteer in the Kegan Kitchen / Kids Café a part of the Houston Food Bank, where volunteers will help prepare fresh food for kids after school program meals. We will also learn about the Houston Food Bank and Kegan Kitchen and how they serve our community.

Location: 2445 North Freeway, Houston, TX. 77009
Day of Volunteer: Meet in front of the University Center at 7:15am
Dress code: Jeans, comfortable clothes.  No shorts, long jewelry or open toed shoes allowed for working with food.  Please eat breakfast or bring a snack with you!

Friday  March 14th

Friday is the fun day! As a reward for the volunteers’ hard work, those who participated in two or more volunteer days the week of Spring Break will get a FREE Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo package, which includes transportation, admission and tickets for carnival rides and games.   (Sorry lunch is on your own – enjoy some crazy good Carnival Food!)

Day of Event: Meet in front of the University Center at 10:00AM
You must sign up for this event with trip leaders when you volunteer during the week.
