Section 1194.22 Web-based Intranet and Internet Information and Applications
Element Criteria Supporting Features Remarks and Explanations
Text Equivalents (a) A text equivalent for every non-text element shall be provided (for example, via "alt", "longdesc", or in element content). Supported Text equivalents describe the nature of images.
Multimedia (b) Equivalent alternatives for any multimedia presentation shall be synchronized with the presentation. NA This site does not include any multimedia presentations.
Color (c) Web pages shall be designed so that all information conveyed with color is also available without color, for example from context or markup. Supported Color used to convey required fields on the contact page has been marked with an asterisk (*). Colors on pages have been tested for sufficient contrast.
Readability (d) Documents shall be organized so they are readable without requiring an associated style sheet. Supported This site uses valid CSS to separate presentation from structure. All pages are readable and make sense with the CSS disabled.
Server-Side Image Maps (e) Redundant text links shall be provided for each active region of a server-side image map. NA This site does not use server-side image maps.
Client-Side Image Maps (f) Client-side image maps shall be provided instead of server-side image maps except where the regions cannot be defined with an available geometric shape. Supported The University of Houston web design guidelines require using an image map footer. All clickable areas in the image map have descriptive alt text and a title.
Data Tables (g) Row and column headers shall be identified for data tables. Supported This site uses tables for data only. Data tables have row and column headers.
Data Tables (h) Markup shall be used to associate data cells and header cells for data tables that have two or more logical levels of row or column headers. Supported Data cells are associated with the appropriate row and column headers.
Frames (i) Frames shall be titled with text that facilitates frame identification and navigation. NA This site does not use frames.
Flicker Rate (j) Pages shall be designed to avoid causing the screen to flicker with a frequency greater than 2 Hz and lower than 55 Hz. Supported Page elements do not cause the screen to flicker with a frequency greater than 2 Hz and lower than 55 Hz.
Text-Only Page (k) A text-only page, with equivalent information or functionality, shall be provided to make a web site comply with the provisions of this part, when compliance cannot be accomplished in any other way. The content of the text-only page shall be updated whenever the primary page changes. NA This site is accessible and does not require any text-only pages.
Scripts (l) When pages utilize scripting languages to display content, or to create interface elements, the information provided by the script shall be identified with functional text that can be read by assistive technology. Supported The server-side script used to validate the contact form renders text in HTML that can be read by assistive technology.
Applets and Plug-Ins (m) When a web page requires that an applet, plug-in or other application be present on the client system to interpret page content, the page must provide a link to a plug-in or applet that complies with §1194.21(a) through (l). NA This site does not require any applets or plug-ins.
Electronic Forms (n) When electronic forms are designed to be completed on-line, the form shall allow people using assistive technology to access the information, field elements, and functionality required for completion and submission of the form, including all directions and cues. Supported The contact form is accessible. Form fields/controls are properly associated with labels, and tab-through order is logical.
Skip Navigation (o) A method shall be provided that permits users to skip repetitive navigation links. Supported A "skip to main content" link allows users to tab directly to the main content on each page. Meaningful labels for headings and links allow screen reader users to navigate quickly to locations on the pages and site.
Time Delays (p) When a timed response is required, the user shall be alerted and given sufficient time to indicate more time is required. NA This site requires no timed responses.

State law requires that users of this site be informed that this site collects the following information about the users: the number of times someone visits this web site. If you respond to the "comments" form included on this site, your response, comment, or question will be forwarded to a staff member in Student Affairs who will respond directly to you. Otherwise, no data is archived or kept for any other purpose.
