The Moores School of Music supports a serious program in organ performance with a full studio of organ majors from the bachelor through the doctoral levels. Students may also pursue the prestigious performer's certificate in organ. Courses include applied music instruction, organ literature, organ pedagogy, church music skills, source readings in the history of the organ, conducting, collegium musicum, and advanced keyboard skills. Monthly workshops are conducted by visiting performers, scholars, and organ builders. Doctoral students produce scholarly essays and final documents on historical topics. Generous scholarships up to full tuition are available for organ majors at all levels; organ students on scholarship pay in-state Texas tuition rates regardless of their residency. Many graduate students in organ also have teaching assistantships. Houston is the fourth largest city in the US, with numerous opportunities for employment in local churches.
