Why Study Stage Management at the University of Houston?

We train for the profession with the profession, in the 4th largest city in the country. Our students learn in intimate, collaborative, ensemble based classes. Professional artists and guest lecturers work with our students, allowing them to network and gain practical experience. Our faculty and professional artists are able to give one-on-one mentoring and career consultation. Houston has a large arts community that gives our students access to internships, observerships, and overhire possibilities with organizations such as: Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet, Alley Theatre, Stages Repertory Company, and Local 51. In addition, the School of Theatre & Dance produces the Houston Shakespeare Festival, a summer festival, which performs to approximately 30,000 patrons, each season.

"Rachel Bush was an extraordinary stage manager to work with; as a mentor, a professor, the designer of a stage management degree program, she is, to my mind, as good as they come.  I’ve worked with a lot of her students and, without fail, remarked on their superb work ethic and their knowledge of how valuable, efficient and effective a stage manager can be to a director and company."

-Mark Medoff, Tony Award Winner and Oscar Nominated Playwright, Children of a Lesser God

“I am so grateful for the guidance and support I've had through college, and beyond. My focus was stage management, but I also got to dive into a lot of tech and design work. I think the size of the program plays a large part. You receive a lot of one-on-one mentorship that it's truly invaluable. I wouldn't trade my education for anything.”
