Comedy 101 (Grades 8 - 12)

Comedy 101

Comedy 101 is a short play that addresses a brief history of theatre and comedy in one 45-minute session. Using the story of one love-struck teen and her object of affection, the play effectively addresses a number of dramatic, as well as literary ideas. Molly loves Jack, Jack pines for Titania, and Puck (Shakespeare), El Perro (Capa y Espada), and Columbina (Comedia) just want to help. Through the three scenes in the play you are introduced to Shakespearean ideas, Comedia forms and Capa y Espada ideals. There is magic, sword fights, and a dose of romance all topped off with a deus ex machina that includes an appearance by the Greek comedienne Lysistrata. Comedy is the main subject, so it is addressed by all three magical characters and illustrated in modern context throughout, giving teachers the opportunity to start discussions and enjoy teachable moments with students.

Comedy 101 was written by Elizabeth Keel, a Playwrighting alumni of the University of Houston School of Theatre & Dance. All of the actors are current students in the University of Houston School of Theatre & Dance.

Comedy 101 tours on Friday mornings throughout the academic year. Bookings are made through the Young Audiences of Houston. For more booking information on bringing Comedy 101 to your school, please contact Young Audience of Houston at 713-520-9267 or yahou@yahouston.org or visit www.yahouston.org.
