Sociological Students Association

The Sociology Students Association (SSA) at the University of Houston works to demonstrate the relevance and applicability of sociology to UH and the broader Houston community. The organization aims to create an intellectual environment that enhances the experience of undergraduate students interested in Sociology. This is accomplished through regular meetings, campus activities, and community outreach.

Courtney Adamez- President

Courtney Adamez is a senior majoring in sociology with a minor in economics. She spends her free time volunteering with Elder Helpers as well as at St. Luke’s Hospital. She is actively involved in civic engagement and education, serving as a Texas Civic Ambassador with the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Life. After graduation Courtney hopes to attend graduate school to pursue her masters and PhD. Her academic interests include the study of culture, religion, socioeconomics and social structures. Her goals for the Sociology Students Association involve growing the group by offering more opportunities to come together whether it be for academic conversations, fund raising, community engagement, or just to have a place to make friends and see friendly faces.

Anna Galan- Vice President

Anna Galan is currently pursuing a B.A. in sociology with a minor in psychology and plans to graduate in spring of 2018. Her areas of sociological interest include race and culture, sociology of gender, and educational inequality. As the vice president, Anna helps to execute and facilitate meetings as well as to assist in the development of the organization by balancing both internal and external relationships. Upon graduating, Anna plans to pursue her Masters in school psychology and aspires to work with students in schools from underprivileged communities.

Winnie Tran- Secretary

Winnie Tran is a junior pursuing a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Sociology. She plans on attending law school after she graduates in Fall 2018. Winnie is a second generation Vietnamese American, who hopes to improve local communities by working with UH Sociological Association. She was previously involved in Lone Star College Sociology Club.

Sid Weaver – Treasurer

Sebastian Weaver, known by most people on campus as Sid, is a junior majoring in psychology with a minor in sociology. Sid is particularly interested in how psychology and sociology overlap to explain a host of social, political, and economic issues. Sid has a variety of hobbies, but creative writing is his principal one. He particularly enjoys interjecting sociological theories in his writing. 

Noemi Medina- Social Media Coordinator

Noemi Medina is a senior pursuing a B.A. in psychology with a minor in sociology. She loves this major/minor combo as it gives her great insight into the world on a micro and macro level. Noemi plans to use what she has learned here at UH in her next life as a working professional. She really has the UH spirit and wants to spread it. Go Coogs!

Sky Hall- Historian

Sky Hall is a psychology major who also has a passion for sociology. In fact, she loves all the sciences, and that includes anything and everything from space to cells. Sky is also a C.O.R.E. team member at the Women and Gender Resources Center. As the historian of the Sociology Club, Sky is excited to document all of our events and gatherings, so that future club members have a good idea of what our mission is. Go coogs!
