Admission Information

NOTE to FALL 2014 Applicants: If you are planning on applying for the FALL 2014 TERM the procedure is all online. Please visit the website of the University of Houston Graduate School at http://www.uh.edu/graduate-school/prospective-students/Admissions/how-to-apply/ for detailed information on the new online process. We highly encourage all Fall 2014 applicants to submit all of their documents electronically:

  • through myUH, and
  • with electronic ETS delivery of test scores and
  • electronically delivered transcripts by academic institutions, if available.
  • Letters of recommendations should be received electronically through the new e-reference process in place. Applicants need to submit reference information on the applytexas.org application

In the case when an university cannot send electronic transcripts, hard-copy submission of transcripts must be sent to the address for graduate admissions:

Applicants must submit the following items for admission into the graduate studies program:

  • Graduate Application: apply online.
  • Official GRE test scores: The GRE should be taken at least one month prior to submitting your application.  The GRE score must not be more than 5 years old. GRE scores must be electronically sent to UH Admissions by Educational Testing Service (ETS) using system code #6870. Official GRE scores must be received by the University for the application is considered complete.  
  • International Students must also provide evidence of satisfactory English proficiency. The TOEFL exam provides this evidence and must be taken at least a month before submitting your application. TOEFL scores must to be more than 2 years old. The scores must be sent electronically to UH Admissions directly by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) using system code #6870. Official TOEFL scores must be received by the University for the application is considered complete.
  • Official transcripts from all higher educational institutions must be sent directly to the University of Houston Admissions, using code #6870. Official transcripts must be provided before the application is considered complete.
  • International Students must send original or certified transcripts of previous education both in the original language and the English translation to the UH Graduate School.

  • International Students have other application requirements. For a complete list or requirements check the UH Admissions website for international students at http://www.uh.edu/admissions/international/index.php . The requirements include but are not  limited to a statement of understanding, a letter of financial backing, degree clarification form, two passport sized photos, a statement of purpose.

  • 2 letters of recommendation, preferably from academic sources must be submitted in order for the application to be complete. Applicant will provide emails of the individuals who will be writing the recommendation letters. Those individuals will get emails from the Graduate School asking for online recommendation letter submissions.
  • A Statement of Purpose must be submitted through the checklist online procedure in order for the application to be complete. An SOP is a brief essay of 1 to 2 pages about why applicant wants to pursue graduate work in sociology, experiences in sociology, and plans after receiving a graduate degree.
  • A current resume must be provided through the checklist online procedure in order for the application to be complete.
  • All applicants must pay the required application fees before their application is considered complete and ready for review.
  • Statement of purpose:
  • Optional: If graduate assistantship is desired, the  Application for student assistantship. must be filled out and uploaded in your checklist procedure under “optional materials.” 2 additional letters of recommendation (could be from the same individuals who are writing in support for the application) reflecting not only your academic achievements but also your work habits and work ethic need to be sent directly to the Sociology Department at:
