Dr. Jack Fletcher, Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology was the honoree at the Parish School’s Annual Fall Luncheon event on October 11, 2016 for “Giving Voice to Children”. Dr. Fletcher received the Robin Parish Award for helping the Parish School founder establish programs to improve children’s reading and communication skills.
Dr. Christiane Spitzmüller, Associate Professor of Psychology was interviewed on the Houston Public Media (HPM) Bauer Business Focus to highlight how to measure workers‘ competency. She will lead a workshop along with Jaih Shah at the Operational Excellence in Oil and Gas Conference in Houston on 11/7/2016 and teach competency management to energy companies. Dr. Spitzmüller is a co-principal investigator of the Center for Applied Psychological Research (CAPR).
Dr. Rheeda Walker, Associate Professor of Psychology was the guest expert on the Oprah Winfrey Network’s T.D. Jakes show which aired 9/27/2016. The episode "Silent Epidemics" featured people living with mental illnesses without treatment and addressed the challenges of diagnosing psychological problems and increasing mental health awareness. Bishop TD Jakes also interviewed Dr. Walker about mental illness in the African American community and the focus of her research for the last two decades.

Dipali Rinker, Research Assistant Professor, presented her research at the 2016 Research Society on Alcoholism Annual Conference in New Orleans. Her article, “Drunkorexia 101: Increasing Alcohol’s Effects Through Diet and Exercise Behaviors” raised the awareness of the complex drinking-related behaviors college students are engaged in that take place before, during, and after a drinking event and the risks for serious negative consequences related to alcohol use.
