CLASS students inducted into Phi Beta Kappa

In March, over 70 CLASS students were inducted into the prestigious honor society, Phi Beta Kappa. Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor society. Each year, only one college senior in a hundred, nationwide, is invited to join the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Only about 10 percent of the nation's institutions of higher learning have Phi Beta Kappa chapters, and only about 10 percent of the arts and sciences graduates at these distinguished institutions are invited to join. read more

Master of Athletic Training Program approved for accreditation

This May, 12 University of Houston students will proudly graduate with master’s degrees in athletic training. They are the first graduates of the program that began in 2014, and is newly accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). read more

Doctoral candidate’s research reveals understated side of Walt Whitman

English doctoral candidate Zachary Turpin has discovered a 13-part, 47,000-word series that famous poet Walt Whitman wrote for the New York Atlas in 1858, under the name Mose Velsor. The University of Iowa-based Walt Whitman Quarterly Review has published the entire 13-part series along with an introductory essay by Turpin. read more


Lynn Voskuil only U.S. scholar awarded a coveted NEH “double win” in 2015

The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded English Professor Lynn Voskuil two grants for her research project, “Horticulture and Imperialism: The Garden Spaces of the British Empire, 1789-1914.” read more

Professor, Director of Arte Público Press to receive high honor from Spain

The University of Houston’s Brown Foundation professor of Hispanic Studies, Nicolás Kanellos, will receive one of the Spanish government’s highest distinctions. With the Royal Sanction of Spain’s King Felipe VI, Kanellos will receive the “Cruz de la Orden de Isabel la Católica” in a private ceremony at the Houston residence of the Consul General of Spain. read more

This semester, a class of UH students examined the taco and its cultural relevance in the city. Led by Temple Northup, associate professor and interim director of the Jack J. Valenti School of Communication, students have been exploring the city, visiting local taco eateries and developing multimedia projects focused on the taco’s impact on local culture. read more

A new study from the Department of Health and Human Performance finds a child’s risk for obesity or malnutrition may be tied to the mother’s perception of her child’s weight status. A key to understanding this phenomenon may lie in how she regards her own weight status. read more

Student writers, artists developing visual stories during graphic novel workshop

This semester, a class of University of Houston students is learning the fine art of visual storytelling from a pair of University of Houston professors who are well acquainted with the craft. English professor and graphic novelist Mat Johnson and art professor Michael Ray Charles teamed up this semester to guide UH’s Graphic Novel Workshop. read more
