The University of Houston hosted the nationally televised Republican Presidential Candidates Debate last month in the Moores Opera House. Moderated by CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, the debate was one of the most-discussed verbal matches of this election season. The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences hosted several events in conjunction with the debate for students, faculty and the community. read more

Hobby Center experts correctly predict election results
On Feb. 24, a statewide poll conducted by Houston Public Media and the Hobby Center for Public Policy showed Sen. Ted Cruz with a 14-point lead over Donald Trump prior to the Super Tuesday primary elections. Super Tuesday’s actual results showed Cruz beat Trump by 17 points. read more

CLASS’s Army ROTC program was selected as the “Program of the Year” within the 5th ROTC Region and will be receiving the MacArthur Award later this spring. In addition, LTC Neil T. Chaffee was selected as the Professor of Military Science of the Year. read more

New UH College of the Arts uniting student artists, actors, musicians
Last month, the University of Houston System Board of Regents has endorsed the creation of a new College of the Arts as a distinct academic entity at the University of Houston. This change reorganizes a number of departments and centers into the University’s 14th college. read more

Public Policy, Social Work programs come together in new dual degree
Sound social work practice relies on sound public policy. Beginning in fall 2016, students at the University of Houston will be able to pursue one program that prepares them for both. The UH Hobby Center for Public Policy (HCPP) and the Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW) are offering a dual program that allows students to earn a master’s degree in social work (MSW) and public policy (MPP) concurrently. read more

New clinic opens at UH for adolescent, family counseling
A new clinical research center at UH, called UH-ADAPT, provides support for the transition to adolescence and the family conflicts that often brings. With assessments and individual counseling already under way, group therapy sessions start this month. read more

Early research experience begins HERE at UH
Through the University of Houston’s Office of Undergraduate Research, students work with faculty mentors on a range of research projects. This summer, the office will offer rising sophomores and juniors another opportunity to explore research processes and methods. The Houston Early Research Experience (HERE) is a two-week campus workshop led by Honors College faculty. Under the guidance of these professors, students will focus research on projects centered on the city of Houston. read more

Expert on undocumented immigrant youth to visit UH
Dr. Roberto Gonzales, Assistant Professor at Harvard University and Associate Editor of the journal “Social Problems,” will visit campus on March 29. Gonzales is one of the nation’s leading experts on undocumented immigrant youth and young adults. Mining the results of a twelve-year study that followed 150 undocumented young adults in Los Angeles, his ethnography “Lives in Limbo” exposes the failures of a system that integrates children into K-12 schools but ultimately denies them the rewards of their labor. read more

Newbery Medal winner Matt de la Peña will visit UH on March 28. De la Peña, the New York Times bestselling author of six young adult novels and two critically-acclaimed picture books, will be featured in two speaking events on campus. read more

Dr. Karma Nabulsi of Oxford University delivers AAEF Lecture on March 31
The inaugural Nijad and Zeina Fares AAEF Lecture in Modern Arab History will be delivered by Dr. Karma Nabulsi of Oxford University on Thursday, March 31. The title of her lecture is “Rousseau and Palestine: A Radical Tradition of Popular Sovereignty.” Dr. Nabulsi is a distinguished Palestinian public intellectual, political theorist, historian, and former national representative. She is a senior faculty member and director of undergraduate studies in the Department of Politics and International Relations at Oxford University. read more
