Rev. Lawsaon and Dr. King

On April 4, 1968, an assassin took the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the most prominent civil rights leader of the 20 th century. In remembrance of Dr. King’s life and work, Dr. Antonio D. Tillis, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and M. D. Anderson Professor in Hispanic Studies at the University of Houston, invites you to a program commemorating the acclaimed civil rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize recipient on the 50 th anniversary of his death. The event will be held on April 4, 2018, at the UH A.D. Bruce Religion Center, located at 3841 Cullen Blvd.

After founding Houston’s Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, Rev. Lawson invited Dr. King to speak at the church in 1963. During this discussion, Rev. Lawson will reflect on the civil rights movement and his personal relationship and journey with Dr. King.

“Pausing to recognize the 50 th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination is paramount to our understanding of the civil rights movement and it demands a significant commemoration,” says Dean Tillis. “More importantly, to have Rev. Lawson share his personal journey with Dr. King helps preserve this rich legacy.”

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the African American Studies Program will host the event, which will kick off with a reception at 5:15 p.m. The program will commence at 5:55 p.m.
