Feb. 1: OneFalseStep: Muhammad Ali and the Fight for Civil Rights in Houston

Malachi Crawford, Ph.D., assistant director of the African American Studies Program presents his digital humanities project examining the history, socio-economic impact, political influence, and cultural meaning of sports icon Muhammad Ali’s struggle to gain conscientious objector status and a ministerial exemption from participating in warfare while living and protesting for civil rights and social justice in Houston.


National Parks

Feb. 4: “The African American Experience in Our National Parks” lecture

11:30 a.m. in Agnes Arnold Hall Room 210

Dr. Joy Kinard, Superintendent of the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument, will discuss the historic African-American connections to the creation of the National Park Service, which celebrates its centennial this year. She will discuss how Buffalo Soldiers served as the nation’s first park rangers and the integration of segregated camping facilities. Free and open to the public.
