Center for Arts Leadership launches Profiles in Leadership
New interview series spotlights Houston-area culture creators and influencers
On Tuesday, November 12, the Center for Arts Leadership will host a reception to celebrate the launch of Profiles in Leadership and its partnership with Arts + Culture Texas.
Profiles in Leadership is a new series of curated conversations between Sixto Wagan, the Center’s director and Houston-area culture creators and influencers. The Center for Arts Leadership investigates, creates and tests leadership practices in the arts through gatherings and strategic partnerships.
“Arts leadership comes from all sectors in the community. The Profiles in Leadership series highlights established and untraditional leaders who have used arts as a medium to initiate long-term impact on communities, and not just audiences. ”
Arts + Culture Texas is a free magazine distributed across the state that focuses on contemporary visual and performing arts. The periodical will publish on a quarterly basis excerpts of the profiles, which are done in a question-and-answer format.
“Arts leadership is a topic I have been interested since I began working at Arts + Culture two years ago – and I wrote about it through our Cultural Warrior series," says Nancy Wozny, editor in chief of Arts + Culture Texas.
"It's so exciting to know we can continue this work through the Center for Arts Leadership at University of Houston. It's especially gratifying to work with Sixto Wagan as I have been a witness to his own growth as an arts leader."
The first article in the Profiles in Leadership series will be published in the November 2013 issue of Arts + Culture Texas. It features Selven O’Keef Jarmon, a Houston-based fashion designer/visual artist whose artistic practice led him to South Africa to work with fashion design students and hand beading artisans. Mr. Wagan talks with Mr. Jarmon about vanishing cultures and the impact of the seven years in South Africa had on his career.
Mr. Jarmon and Bulelwa Bam, the crafts hub manager of Eastern Cape Arts, which promotes traditional beadwork and South African crafts, will be recognized at the Nov. 12 reception, 5:30 – 7 p.m. in the lobby of the Wortham Theater on the main UH campus.
