Blaffer Art Museum offers youth and adults introductions to contemporary art

Summer Arts, Saleri Studio Saturdays, and Brown Bag Gallery Tours set for July

The Blaffer Art Museum hosts this month Summer Arts, its annual workshop for elementary and middle school students. Led by artist and UH alumna Lindsey Slavin, the workshop runs July 9 – 19 and is an opportunity for young people to create dynamic new works inspired by Blaffer exhibitions.

Blaffer is presenting two exhibitions – Andy Coolquitt “Attainable Excellence” and Pamela Fraser “The Fourth Dimension was Ha-Ha, in Other Words, That is Laughter.” In July, it expands on these collected works by offering public programs designed to educate and engage art aficionados of all ages.

For works focused on Coolquitt’s art, students will use found objects in their own art. Fraser’s pieces will inspire an exploration of color. Students also will develop artistic alter egos and compose short stories and generate art focused on their respective characters.

Summer Arts registration is $80, and scholarships are available. Students can select Tuesday/Thursday or Wednesday/Friday sessions. All Summer Arts sessions run 9:30 a.m. – noon.

In July, Blaffer also hosts Saleri Studio Saturdays from 1 – 4 p.m., July 13 and 20. These free weekend tours and workshops are open to patrons of all ages.

Following a short tour, participants can create their own art in Blaffer’s Saleri Studio with guidance from Blaffer Curator of Education Katherine Veneman, education intern Araceli Casas and UH School of Art student Nohelia Vargas. These events are free, but reservations are required.

To enroll students in Summer Arts or to reserve a spot in Saleri Studio Saturdays, contact Veneman at keveneman@uh.edu or 713-743-9526.

Also in July, the museum will present its Brown Bag Gallery Talks. On July 10, artist Hana Hillerova delivers a talk and tour on Coolquitt’s work. Texas artist Myke Venable leads a discussion on Fraser’s art on July 17. Both tours begin at noon and are followed by conversations in Blaffer’s lounge. Patrons are encouraged to bring a lunch.

For more details on Blaffer’s educational events in July, visit its online calendar.

Blaffer Art Museum opened to the public in 1973. Named for Houston arts patron and collector Sarah Campbell Blaffer, the museum quickly earned notoriety as a space for innovative, cutting-edge exhibitions. In addition to hosting artists’ works, the museum commissions work and organizes exhibitions that tour nationally. In 2012, the museum underwent an expansion that included the addition of lounge, new second level spaces (studio, media gallery), front entrance, new signage and redesigned staircase. Arab Spring jumpstarts Center for International and Comparative Studies

Middle East revolutions highlight need for Center’s creation at University of Houston

In the Spring of 2011, demonstrations and protests led by Arab youth in North Africa evolved into political revolutions that pushed out rulers in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

Dubbed the “Arab Spring” by media outlets, the civil uprisings spread to Red Sea and Persian Gulf states, including Yemen, Bahrain, Kuwait, Syria and Sudan. Pro-government forces often met these resistance movements with violence and mass arrests.

As at universities around the globe, the University of Houston held three separate events in 2012 to evaluate the events, dissect the coverage, and make sense of the Arab Spring.

“One event was hosted by a student organization, the second was an event I organized in conjunction with the World Affairs Council of Houston, and the third event was a teleconference,” said Dr. Ryan Kennedy, assistant professor of political science.

However, there was not an on-campus resource to help the organizers of each event communicate with each other or cross-publicize the events to each group’s supporters.

“UH does have the Office of International Studies and Programs,” said Dr. Kennedy. “But that is a resource for students who are interested in studying abroad.”

To better facilitate cross-campus conversations about the world and times we live in, Dr. Kennedy and Dr. Jonathan Slapin, associate professor of political science, started last year the Center for International and Comparative Studies.

“No other place on campus serves as a clearing house for all international activities,” added Dr. Slapin. “The Center for International and Comparative Studies will host events, as well as provide information for any other campus events with an international angle.”

According to the UH Office of Institutional Research, there are more than 3000 international students on campus. The University’s diverse population is a reflection of the multicultural city that surrounds it.

The initial funding from for the Center came from the CLASS Dean’s Office. That money has been used to build the center’s infrastructure, including a website with an events calendar, a Facebook page, and a contacts database. In addition, the Center has funded lectures and workshops attended by undergraduate and graduate students and faculty.

“We want to create a center that is broad enough to cover the areas of the world that are not currently represented by the CLASS centers that already have their own specific mission,” said Dr. Slapin.

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is home to the Language and Culture Center, the Center for the Americas, the Hobby Center for Public Policy, the Language Acquisition Center and the Center for Immigration Research.

Among its departments are Comparative Cultural Studies, which recently launched an India Studies program, and Modern and Classical Languages, which offers majors and minors in several foreign languages and Chinese Studies and Arab Studies programs – two areas of study considered critical to the United States national security.

During its inaugural year, the Center for International and Comparative Studies hosted several guest speakers, as well as promoted UH faculty lectures for programs geared toward undergraduate and graduate students.

One of Center’s best-attended events was the speech delivered by Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, chief of staff for former Secretary of State General Colin Powell. Colonel Wilkerson lectured on the topic, We Need Not Be Enemies: Iran and the U.S. in the 21st Century.

The Center also plans to offer support for faculty and student research projects, as well as eventually secure funding to offer a variety of grant opportunities.

“UH has graduate students interested in doing field work and undergraduates who are getting very interesting internships, like at the U.S. State Department,” said Dr. Kennedy. “And we don’t have funds to help support these students in these endeavors. They may need help with travel and living expenses, for example. These are the kinds of things an international center would try to pick up.”

As a long-term goal, they hope to build the Center into a site that can be selected as a Title VI International Center for Excellence, a designation made by the U.S. Department of Education.

Title VI refers to the section of the Higher Education Act that provides grant funding and programming “to strengthen the capability and performance of American education in foreign languages and international studies,” according to the U.S. Department of Education. Money for Fulbright Fellowships is allocated through this section of the law.

“We want to put UH at the center of debate and discussion on international topics, as well as promote UH as an international university,” said Dr. Kennedy.

National Institute on Drug Abuse awards $675,000 grant to Profs. Zvolensky and Norton

Psychology professors to lead study of smokers with anxiety trying to quit smoking

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S., resulting in more than 440,000 premature deaths a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An additional 25 million smokers will most likely die of a smoking related illness.

To address this problem and further research in the area, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) awarded a $675,000 grant to Michael J. Zvolensky, the Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen Distinguished University Professor in the department of clinical psychology and Peter J. Norton, associate professor of psychology.

“Despite interventions, such as nicotine replacement therapy and national advertising campaigns on the consequences of smoking, people in the smoking cessation and addiction field noticed the rates of tobacco use had stabilized, but the rates of tobacco addiction weren’t any different than they were 20 years ago,” said Dr. Zvolensky.

“We had treated all the easy people, he said. “Those left were the complicated cases with something else going on.

“What we know from our research is that people who smoke often have anxiety and other mental disorders and vice versa. Existing treatment plans for smoking cessation have not addressed anxiety and stress disorders in any formal and meaningful way.”

Professors Zvolensky and Norton will serve as co-principal investigators on a research project examining whether smoking cessation can be increased for anxious smokers using “transdiagnostic” cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), a model that allows therapists to apply one set of principles across anxiety disorders.

Dr. Norton notes one of the biggest problems in helping anxious people quit smoking is that many people smoke cigarettes to calm their nerves or reduce stress. By combining an evidence-based anxiety disorder treatment and smoking cessation program, the project seeks to help smokers quit smoking – and maintain their abstinence - by reducing their anxiety.

Participants are needed for the study. The treatment-based research follows 60 adults, ages 18-65, with anxiety disorders who are smokers of at least 10 cigarettes a day. Participants must have smoked for a year or more and be willing to make an attempt to quit within 30 days of the start of the study. The study involves a telephone pre-screen and a baseline appointment. During the baseline appointment, participants will complete an interview, and if eligible, receive free nicotine replacement therapy. They will meet with therapists for 11-weeks to decrease anxiety and receive help through the cessation experience.

“The significance of this research is developing an effective smoking cessation treatment that targets people with anxiety disorders, so they will be smoke-free,” said Dr. Zvolensky. “The second goal is reducing the amount of use, also known as harm reduction. You don’t have to view things as complete abstinence to be successful. That’s important in the case of tobacco, in particular, because even simple reductions from 20 to 10 or from 10 to five cigarettes a day could have a linear decrease in exposure to a lot of other negative outcomes.”

A prominent researcher in health behaviors, Dr. Zvolensky has been cited extensively for his research on the relationship between anxiety and addiction. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles; co-edited two books, Distress Tolerance: Theory, Research and Clinical Applications and Anxiety in Health Behaviors and Physical Illness; and launched the Anxiety and Health Research Laboratory/Substance Use Treatment Clinic (AHRL-SUTC) as a free, empirically-based evaluation and treatment service center for adults struggling with anxiety disorders and substance use.

An expert on anxiety disorders, Dr. Norton serves as director of the Anxiety Disorder Clinic. He is the author of the book Group Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy of Anxiety. A Transdiagnostic Treatment Manual and co-author of The Anti-Anxiety Workbook: Proven Strategies to Overcome Worry, Phobias, Panic and Obsessions. He has authored more than 90 research papers on such topics as anxiety disorders, CBT and chronic pain and serves on the editorial boards of two scientific journals.

To get more information about participating in the research study, please call AHRL-SUTC at (713) 743-8056 or visit http://www.uh.edu/class/psychology/clinical-psych/research/ahrl-sutc/index.php
