2011 CLASS Faculty Research & Creative Arts Reception

Showcase of the College’s tenure and tenure-track faculty’s scholarship and creativity will be an annual event

Dean John Roberts hosted the first CLASS Faculty Research and Creative Arts Reception on November 2. Each of the College’s 16 departments and several of its centers and interdisciplinary programs developed exhibits and short electronic presentations for the reception that was organized by Kathleen Brosnan, Associate Dean for Faculty and Research.

The reception, which will be an annual event, is one of many initiatives launched this year to “enhance the research profile of the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences,” Roberts said. “As a public university, the importance of making what we do visible cannot be underestimated.”

President and Chancellor Renu Khator praised as impressive the diversity and productivity of the College’s faculty. “This college more than any other college… is almost like a comprehenvise university in itself,” she said to the approximately 150 faculty and staff members assembled in the Rockwell Pavilion of the M.D. Anderson Library.

Rathindra Bose, Vice Chancellor and Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer, publicly reiterated at the reception a commitment he made to Dean Roberts to help the College’s faculty obtain more funding to publish their research.

Research in the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences happens in laboratories, libraries, clinics, choir rooms, dining rooms and dance studios.

Creative activity is respected in this College as much as other scholarly work usually associated with the word “research.”

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, Dean John Roberts hosts the first CLASS Faculty Research and Creative Arts Reception on from 3 – 4:30 p.m. in the Rockwell Pavilion of the M.D. Anderson Library.

The depth, breadth, and high quality of CLASS faculty research and creative activity will be on display. Each of the College’s 16 departments and several of its centers and interdisciplinary programs have developed exhibits and short electronic presentations for the reception.

Dean Roberts expects this showcase of the tenure and tenure-track faculty members’ contributions to their academic and creative fields to become an annual event.

“This reception provides a wonderful opportunity for our faculty to present their research to their colleagues in CLASS and to the campus leadership,” said Kathleen Brosnan, associate dean for faculty and research, who organized this year’s reception.

University President and Chancellor Renu Khator, whose faculty appointment is in the College, will be in attendance, as well as Rathindra Bose, vice chancellor and vice president for research and technology transfer.
