Placement Audition Requirements

  • Orchestra seating placement will be determined by auditions at the beginning of TMF. Auditions for viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and horn will take place on Saturday, June 4, 2016 starting at 2:30 p.m.  Trumpet placement auditions will take place on Sunday, June 5 starting at 4 p.m.  Percussion placement auditions will take place on Sunday, June 5 and will begin at 4:30 p.m. There are no placement auditions for trombone, tuba and harp—part assignments will be made by TMF’s Music Director, Franz Krager, in consultation with instrumental faculty and based on daily performance and preparation at all rehearsals.
  • Each instrument requires specific excerpts and solos. Specific excerpts may be listed for piccolo, English horn, E-flat clarinet, bass clarinet and contrabassoon. Auxiliary instrument auditions are not required for the placement auditions. However, it is expected that all auxiliary instrument responsibilities/opportunities will be shared in each section.
  • Violin placement auditions will take place on Sunday, June 5, beginning at 9 a.m. in MSM Room 205. Times will be pre-assigned and emailed to participants prior to arrival.
  • Concertmaster auditions: Candidates may be selected to audition for concertmaster for each week based on the results of the placement audition. Anyone selected to audition for concertmaster will be given an opportunity to lead the orchestra, in rotation, at its first rehearsal on Sunday, June 5. Final assignments will be made by TMF faculty and Music Director.

You are responsible for preparing all required audition materials for your instrument. You are also responsible for downloading, printing, and bringing copies of the placement audition excerpts with you to TMF. PLEASE BE FULLY PREPARED. This will be your only placement audition, and it will determine your seating for all weeks of the festival.

You are also responsible for preparing your ENTIRE Respighi, Tartini, and Clark parts for the audition if specific excerpts from these pieces are not already listed for your instrument. Faculty may select excerpts from your assigned parts during your audition.

Part assignments will be distributed as equitably as possible and are contingent upon your placement audition. All principal assignments will be recommended to the Music Director by the placement audition faculty.
