Dr. Troy Bennefield is the Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at the University of Houston. In this role he directs the marching band, basketball bands, and other athletic bands as needed. In addition to assisting the Director of Bands in all aspects of the program, Dr. Bennefield teaches conducting, methods courses, advises graduate students, and conducts with all concert bands. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Bennefield earned the Doctorate in Instrument Conducting at the University of Oklahoma under Dr. William Wakefield. As a Doctoral Conducting Associate, he assisted with the athletic and concert bands, including directing the women’s basketball band at the 2010 Final Four. Before returning to Oklahoma, Dr. Bennefield served as the Associate Director of Bands and Percussion Coordinator at Alpharetta High School in the Atlanta area. Opening in 2004, the Alpharetta program quickly produced numerous All-State musicians and the percussion program was invited to perform at the GMEA and ASTA conferences. He also hold the Bachelors in Music Education from the University of Alabama and a Masters in Percussion Performance from the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Bennefield has published articles in The Instrumentalist and the Georgia Music News, and has published marimba works through Keyboard Percussion Publications. He lives in Houston with his wife Michelle and their dogs Mattox and Norman.
