Michelle

Michelle is a Vocal Performance Major studying with Cynthia Clayton, with minors in German and Marketing. She is a member of the Moores School of Music Concert Chorale, and in 2013 she competed with them in the International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktoberdorf, Germany. She is also a member of the student-led female acapella group, Acabellas, and is a member Sigma Alpha Iota, a professional music fraternity for women. Michelle spent the 2014-15 school year studying abroad in Lüneburg, Germany, in partial fulfillment of her German Minor. 

This season Michelle is performing Yvette in Puccini's La Rondine and Jenny Slade in Robert Ward's Roman Fever. She has also been selected as the Soprano soloist in Mozart's Mass in C Major, "Coronation" with the Moores School of Music Symphony Orchestra and choirs. In 2016, she won the Herrenchor Award for the Houston Saengerbund German Vocal Competition and was also a finalist in the Madame Rose Palmai-Tenser Voice Scholarship Competition. After completing her degree, Michelle plans on pursuing a Masters degree to further her vocal studies.

Troy is a Music Education student at the Moores School of Music. He currently studies saxophone with Dan Gelok and composition with Dr. Marcus Maroney. Troy is actively involved in many ensembles including Symphonic Winds, Jazz Orchestra, The Spirit of Houston, Cougar Brass, ManCorps, Men of Moores, and Floreat. He also is an active member of Kappa Kappa Psi and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Troy holds the following leadership positions: President of Phi Mu Alpha, Section Leader in marching band and Cougar Brass, and Section Leader in ManCorps. After his undergrad, he plans to become a high school band director in Texas for several years before potentially pursuing a Master's degree.

Dylan

Dylan is a senior music education student, studying tuba with Mark Barton. Dylan is currently a tuba section leader in the Spirit of Houston Marching band, and is the secretary of Kappa Kappa Psi, a National Honorary Band Service Fraternity. Dylan teaches at many Houston area middle, and high schools, both as a private lessons teacher, master class teacher and marching technician. In addition to music, Dylan likes to be involved with community projects, including Relay for Life, and other community organizations. Upon graduation, Dylan hopes to become a high school band director. Go COOGS!

Laura

Laura Lisk is a junior vocal performance major who studies with Cynthia Clayton. She is a member of Moores School of Music Concert Chorale and in 2013 she traveled with them to Marktoberdorf, Germany, where they won first place in the International Chamber Choir Competition. Laura is also a member of the all-female acapella group, Acabellas. Last season, she performed her first opera role as Vera Boronel in Menotti's The Consul. This season she will be performing in choruses for Tales of Hoffman and Elixir of Love, as well as performing in the outreach opera, Gianni Schicchi. Outside of music, Laura is also a part of the Honors College. She has lived on campus every semester, has taken summer classes at UH, and has worked both on and off campus.

Ryan

Ryan Rogers is a junior in the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston, and is currently pursuing a double major in Piano Performance and Choral Music Education. A lifelong musician, Ryan began studying music on the piano at age three. In high school, he was selected for the Texas All State Choir in 2012 and 2013 and served as principle pianist and percussionist for the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio’s Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2013, Ryan received the Texas Music Educators Association Bill Cormack Scholarship and was named a TMEA Scholar.

Since then, Ryan has become involved with several performing ensembles, including the San Antonio Chamber Choir, performing with them at the 2013 National ACDA Conference in Dallas, Texas and the 2014 TCDA Conference in San Antonio, Texas. At Moores, he is in the piano studio of Dr. Tali Morgulis, and studies voice with Zachery Averyt. Ryan has also been active as a collaborative pianist, performing for the 2013 Cactus Pear Music Festival Young Artist Program and the 2015 Saarburg International Chamber Music Festival in Saarburg, Germany. At UH, he sings with the award-winning Moores School Concert Chorale under Dr. Betsy Cook Weber, serving as Tenor Section Leader for 2015, including for the ensemble’s world championship at the 2015 Grand Prix of Nations in Magdeburg, Germany. He also serves as Director of Floreat and sings in two other student-directed a cappella ensembles at Moores, Men of Moores and Ardore. In his free time, Ryan enjoys performing with his band, Othello, arranging, and recording his own compositions.

Kevin

Kevin is a fourth year student at the Moores School of Music and is a current member of the University of Houston Wind Ensemble under the direction of David Bertman. In his 4th year at the Moores School of Music, Kevin is serving his 3rd year as a Moores School of Music Ambassador.  He has also served as the baritone section leader of “The Spirit of Houston” marching band, was a member of the University of Houston Euphonium Choir, and has been an active member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity having served as the Music Director, Vice President, and his current position as the chapter President. Kevin is an alumnus of the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps, having marched baritone in the 2015 show, “The Spark of Invention”.  A few distinguished awards he has received include, Semifinalist in the 2014 ITEC Euphonium Artist Solo Competition, the Most Outstanding New Member of The Spirit of Houston award, John Phillips Sousa award, and was a member of the 2012 Texas 5A All-State Symphonic Band. Kevin has also toured with the Star of Texas Ambassadors of Music and has played in countries such as, England, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Lichtenstein. Kevin is a competitor at various euphonium competitions including the 2013 SCRTEC Euphonium Solo Young Artist Competition, the 2014 International Tuba Euphonium Conference Euphonium Artist Competition, and the 2014 and 2015 Leonard Falcone International Euphonium Artist Competition. Outside of school, he is a current marching band technician at The Woodlands High School and La Porte High School, as well as an All-State master class teacher at local school districts.  Upon graduation in the Spring of 2017, Kevin plans to teach at the high school level or junior high level in the Greater-Houston area.

Jessica

Jessica is a music education and flute performance major who studies flute with Peggy Russell. She is a member of the Moores School of Music Wind Ensemble and Concert Women’s Chorus.  She has been a part of the Spirit of Houston Marching Band for three years and served as a mascot for one year. Jessica is also a member of the all-female acapella group, Acabellas, as well as a brother of the Beta Sigma chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi. In the summer she worked as a counselor at Cougar Band Camp. After completing her degree, she hopes to either become a band director or pursue further education as a performer and teach at a collegiate level.

Kara

Kara is a music education major studying viola under Suzanne LeFevre. She is a member of the Moores School Orchestras under the direction of Franz Krager. Her favorite ensemble to perform in is the Moores School Opera Orchestra under Dr. Raymond Harvey. Kara is currently serving as the string chair for the newly formed UH collegiate chapter of the National Association for Music Education. In addition, she is a member of the Nonprofits Leadership Alliance which is a nonprofit management certificate and credential program, providing a segue into arts administration. In her free time, Kara enjoys spending family time exploring the Houston area with her husband, Michael, and their two children, Lincoln and Ava.

Hope

Hope Myers is a Vocal Music Education major at the University of Houston. She currently studies with Dr. Lynda McKnight and participates in several ensembles. She is a member of the Concert Chorale under direction of Dr. Betsy Cook Weber, is a member of the student-led group Ardore, where she has served as Junior Conductor, and has participated in the student-led group AcaBellas. In the summer of 2015, Hope had the wonderful opportunity to compete with the Concert Chorale in the Grand Pix of Choirs competition in Magdeberg, Germany, where they placed first in their age group. She is also a sister of Sigma Alpha Iota, a professional woman’s music fraternity, where she currently serves as the chapter’s Sisterhood Chair. She has worked both on and off campus, and has been a UH Housing tourguide since fall 2014. Upon graduation, Hope plans on directing middle school choir for a few years before pursuing further education. Go Coogs!

Christopher

A native of La Porte, Texas, Christopher is currently a senior who is double majoring in Music Education and Percussion Performance studying under Blake Wilkins. He is currently a member of the Moores Symphony Orchestra, the Moores School Percussion Ensemble, the PANtagonists Steel Drum Band, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a national men's music fraternity. He was formerly a member of the Spirit of Houston Marching Band, the Symphonic Winds, and Cougar Brass. He has performed with the Moores Opera Center's productions of The Marriage of Figaro and Salsipuedes. In his free time, Chris likes to play ultimate frisbee, run, or hangout with friends.  After his undergraduate, he aspires to go to graduate school for Percussion studies.

Monica

Monica is a sophomore Music Education major at the Moores School of Music who currently studies voice with Dr. Lynda Keith McKnight. She is a member of the internationally acclaimed Moores School Concert Chorale under the direction of Dr. Betsy Cook Weber, and is also a member of the mixed pop a cappella group, Rhapsody. In her free time, she likes to read, spend time with her friends and family, and play video games. After her undergraduate, Monica hopes to become a high school choir director and eventually pursue further education as a choral conductor.

Nick is a junior Music Education major at the Moores School of Music and is studying voice with Dr. Timothy Jones and conducting with Dr. Betsy Cook Weber. He is a member of the internationally acclaimed Moores School Concert Chorale, and is currently a junior conductor in the mixed a capella group, Ardore.  This summer Nick had the pleasure of performing Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana with The Houston Symphony Chorus. Outside of his musical activities, Nick is an Eagle Scout, and enjoys spending time with his friends, camping, cooking, and traveling. After graduation, Nick hopes to become a high school choir director and eventually pursue further education as a conductor.

Joey

Joey is currently a Music Education Major on Euphonium under the private instruction of Danny Vinson and plays in the University of Houston Symphonic Winds under the direction of Ms. Marion West. He has been a member of the Spirit of Houston Marching Band for three years and served as a section leader for two. In addition, Joey has been a part of the Cougar Brass basketball band and the University Men’s Choir.  As a brother of the Beta Sigma chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, he continues to provide his dedicated services and support to the marching band in the fall semester and has served as the chapter’s Social Chair and is currently the Vice President of Service.  During the summers of 2013 and 2014, Joey was a member of The Cavalier Drum and Bugle Corps on baritone and was the Concert Euphonium soloist this past summer. He is currently employed at Friendswood High School as a marching tech and a private instructor for euphonium students at the high school and middle school level. After completing his degree, Joey plans on pursuing a career as a band director in the Houston area when he graduates in the spring of 2017.

Martin

Martin is a sophomore pursuing his second bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the Moores School of Music, studying clarinet and bass clarinet with Chester Rowell of the Houston Ballet. He completed his first degree in Psychology at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. He is currently the principal bass clarinetist of the University of Houston Wind Ensemble under the direction of David Bertman, as well as the bass clarinetist in the Moores School of Music Symphony Orchestra and Opera Orchestra, under the direction of Franz Krager. During the summer of 2015, he performed with the University of Houston Wind Ensemble at WASBE’s, (World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles) International Convention in San Jose, California, with the American premier of Leroy Osmon’s Ballet for Wind Band, The Garden of Earthly Delights. Martin continues to teach private lessons and master classes to clarinet and bass clarinet students in the Greater Houston area, teaching students who consistently make the District, Region, Area, and All-State levels. After completing his degree, Martin plans on becoming a middle school band director.

Just finishing his 2014 summer as a participant of the Aspen Summer Music Festival, Marty is an Honors College music education and bassoon performance student at the University of Houston Moores School of Music. He is currently in the studio of Elise Wagner, second bassoonist of the Houston Symphony Orchestra. Other teachers of his include Kathleen Reynolds, Peter Grenier, and Scott Walzel. He currently serves as principal bassoonist in the chamber, ballet, January opera, and symphony orchestras conducted by Franz A. Krager, as well as the Wind Ensemble under the direction of David G. Bertman. Martin has also served as a member of the Spirit of Houston's Color Guard during his first year.  He is looking into the career path of being both a professional symphony musician and an orchestra librarian.

Bensen is a Music Education student at the Moores School of Music. He studies percussion under Dr. Blake Wilkins, and is involved with Percussion Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Steel Band, and The Spirit of Houston Marching Band. He is also studying composition under Dr. Marcus Maroney. After graduation, he hopes to become a band director, and eventually, an orchestral conductor.

Katherine Willer is a sophomore Music Education student at the Moores School of Music. She currently studies flute with Melissa Suhr. She is a member of multiple ensembles including: University Women’s Chorus, Symphonic Band, The Spirit of Houston, and Cougar Brass. She is the Wind Department Chair of the UH chapter of the National Association for Music Education. After her undergrad she plans to become a high school band director.

Tim Hanley is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in clarinet performance and music education from the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston, in Houston, Texas. Tim currently studies clarinet with Mr. Randall Griffin, Principal Clarinetist of the Houston Ballet Orchestra. While at the University of Houston, he has performed with the Wind Ensemble, Opera Orchestra, Symphonic Winds, and the Spirit of Houston Marching Band. In addition, he has performed around Houston with the Xairos Clarinet Quartet at venues such as the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Tim is also a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Fraternity for College Bandmembers, and serves as the Vice President of Service for the organization. After completing his degree, Tim plans on pursuing graduate degree in either clarinet performance or conducting.

Jazmine

Jazmine is a junior Vocal Performance major studying with Melanie Sonnenberg. She is a member of the Moores School of Music Concert Chorale. In the summer of 2013, she competed with Concert Chorale in the Marktoberdorf International Chamber Choir competition, which took place in Marktoberdorf, Germany. Jazmine will be performing in several shows this season with the Moores Opera Center, including Rota's The Italian Straw Hat and Mozart's The Magic Flute. She also assisted stage managed last season's production of Cheryomuski. She sings with the women's a cappella ensemble, Acabellas, and is a member of the professional women's music fraternity, Sigma Alpha Iota.  

Kody

Major:  Composition and Music Education (Instrumental) - Student Teaching in Spring 2016

Kody is a Senior Music Education and Music Composition double major studying with Mark Barton and Rob Smith. He has taught privately in Katy and Spring ISD as a Tuba teacher. He has also given low brass masterclasses at Twin Creeks Middle School, Dueitt Middle School and Spring High School. He has performed with a number of ensembles at the Moores School of Music: playing tuba with the Symphonic Winds, the Concert Band, the contemporary ensemble EYEmusic along with various chamber groups; singing Bass/Baritone in the University Men's Chorus, University Manchoir, University ManCORPS, Floreat and Bob's Your Uncle. He has been the President of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the international men’s music fraternity, and has done several Mill's Music Flower Missions at various hospitals through the organization. Since the summer of 2011, Kody has worked with high school students as a camp counselor at the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp. In his free time, Kody likes to hang out with friends, take road trips, read scores and eat. Upon graduation, he plans to teach band and to compose in Houston and in the future to teach at the collegiate level.
