Master's Degree in World Cultures and Literatures

Requirements for Admission

  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA in last 60 hrs.
  • Satisfactory GRE scores (GRE is waived for UH students with a 3.4 GPA or better.)
  • Major in target language

Provisional Admission

  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA in last 60 hrs.
  • Satisfactory GRE scores (GRE is waived for UH students with a 3.4 GPA or better.)
  • Minor in target language and approval of director

Conditional Admission

  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA in last 60 hrs.
  • Satisfactory GRE scores (GRE is waived for UH students with a 3.4 GPA or better.)
  • high level in target language and some background in target culture and/or literature, with approval of director

Application Process and Materials

Students should submit the following materials to the University of Houston Graduate School. (University of Houston, Graduate Admissions, P.O. Box 3947, Houston, TX 77253-3947).

Admission deadlines are:

  1. For the fall semester: May 20 (international students); June 1 (domestic students)
  2. For the spring semester: October 1 (international students); November 8 (domestic students)

Students who intend to apply must have their papers in order (including their GRE scores) before the deadline. They must also check in advance the following websites: Admissions Contacts and Deadlines and  International Dates and Deadlines (for international students) as deadlines may slightly change from one semester to the next according to the needs of the department and the graduate school.

  • All academic transcripts
  • The GRE general test score (The ETS code for the University of Houston is 6870.) On the “Test Scores” page of the application, students requesting the waiver (UH students with a 3.4 GPA or better) will generally check the box: “Other (UH Graduate School Approved Waiver).”
  • TOEFL score (if required by International Admissions)
  • 2-3 letters of recommendation solicited through CollegeNet
  • Completed departmental application form with student’s statement of intent (500 words) and a brief statement in the target/core language (200 words minimum), especially required for Chinese, French, German and Italian concentrations
