India Studies is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program housed in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages.  India Studies supports instruction, research, and scholarship on contemporary Indian subcontinent, its rich history, culture, and literary traditions at home and abroad.

Students pursuing the India Studies minor complete 15 hrs. of relevant course work in disciplines such as Art History, Political Science, Anthropology, Religious Studies, Sociology, World Cultures and Literatures, English, and Business.

India Studies encourags the study and investigation of modern and traditional Indian cultures, literatures, art, architecture, political, economic and social systems and practices as well as philosophical and religious traditions. Students minoring in India Study examine a broad range of topics crucial to the understanding of the Indian subcontinent, its diverse history, and its role in the region and the world. Thus, for instance, within the framework of the strong global cinema focus of MCL’s World Cultures and Literatures program, students explore Indian cinema in courses such as “Bollywood and Beyond.” In other courses, students learn about health policy and practices as well as philosophical and cultural contexts of yoga, both within India and in a global context.  Emphasizing critical thinking and global engagement, India Studies courses such as “Cultures of India” pursue questions related to modernization, partition, urbanization, colonialism, post-colonialism, transnationalism, gender, sexuality and identity.

Hindi language instruction (Beginning I through Intermediate II) is offered by the Department of Modern and Classical Languages.

The cultural diversity of the Houston metropolitan area provides India Studies students with countless opportunities to expand their experience with and knowledge about India and its diverse, vibrant cultures through community engagement and participation in local events.
