Maya Panchang obtained her Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in
French at the University of Poona in her native India. Subsequently,
she obtained a Bachelor of Education degree with a focus on teaching
English and history, also at the University of Poona. As a recipient of
a full scholarship from the government of France, she was able to study
in Grenoble, France where she completed a Diplôme Supérieur d’aptitude
à l’enseignement du français langue étrangère, a program intended for
teachers of French as a foreign language. Upon arriving in the United
States, she obtained another Master of Arts degree, this time in
teaching French, at the University of Maine. The proximity with Canada
enabled Mrs. Panchang to extend her interests to the literature,
language and history of Quebec and Acadie. She continued her studies in
this area and completed all courses necessary towards a Ph.D in French.
Teaching
At the University of Houston, Mrs. Panchang teaches primarily elementary and intermediate level French classes. She has also taught an advanced grammar and writing course and a course in reading French to graduate students of non-French majors. In her early years of teaching, as a certified k-12 teacher, she had the opportunity to teach all levels of French (1-5) in high school. She has also taught continuing education classes to adults interested in learning French. When still Poona, she taught at the Alliance Française de Poona. Mrs. Panchang enjoys teaching and hopes that her experiences on three continents serve her students well.
