Chinese Government Scholarship

This prestigious scholarship is offered to students in American educational institutions by the Chinese Ministry of Education via the Consulate General of PRC in Houston. The scholarship is intended to strengthen the educational exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States. It provides a full scholarship to study in China for one year. The scholarship recipient may choose a university in China.

This scholarship provides registration fees, tuition, laboratory fees, internship and learning materials. It also provides accommodations, monthly living allowance, and a one-off settlement subsidy. Furthermore, it covers outpatient medical service and insurance.

This scholarship is highly competitive. Scholarships are awarded to students who have demonstrated academic excellence in, and significant commitment to, the study of Chinese.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Preference will be given to students who have declared majors or minors in Chinese Studies and who are juniors or seniors.
  • Overall minimum GPA of 2.75.
  • Overall minimum Chinese GPA of 3.25.
  • Applicant must currently be a full-time student at the University of Houston.

Application process:

  • Submit 3 copies of the “CHINESE GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP from the Ministry of Education of P.R. China APPLICATION FORM”.
  • Submit 3 copies of the candidate’s personal statement in English, stating the reasons for the application. (limit 1 page)
  • Submit 1 copy of a recent transcript.
The deadline to submit the application is March 20, 2012

Excellence in Chinese Studies Scholarship

The Chinese Studies Program will award scholarships to students who have demonstrated academic excellence in, and significant commitment to, the study of Chinese. Scholarships will be awarded to students currently enrolled in second to fourth year Chinese courses.
Eligibility requirements:

  • Enrollment in the Chinese Program during the year 2011-2012.
  • Although not required, preference will be given to students who have declared majors or minors in Chinese studies.
  • Overall minimum GPA of 2.75.
  • Overall minimum Chinese GPA of 3.25.
  • Applicants should be full time students at the University of Houston.
  • Application essay of good quality.


The deadline to submit the application is April 10, 2012

Sino-USA Friendship Award

The Award is given to students who excel in Chinese language courses at UH. It is sponsored annually by the Education Section of the Consulate General of PRC in Houston. Students who are currently taking Chinese language and culture courses offered by the Chinese program are eligible to apply. Students should write a statement of application and submit it to the instructor of the course. The deadline for the application is April 1 each year.

Shang-Zhih and Lucia Lee Wu Scholarship for Chinese Studies Abroad &
The Beijing-UH Summer Study Abroad Scholarship

Both scholarships are largely merit-based. The scholarship amount is limited, and generally comparable between the two scholarships. The second scholarship is sponsored by the host university (BQZX) and will be given to the winners when arriving in Beijing. You may apply for both, but only one award may be given.
