Helping Students Achieve Their Dreams
The Language and Culture Center recognizes that funding is the biggest obstacle for international students wanting to study in the United States. Scholarships can overcome this obstacle by permitting students to pursue their educational and professional dreams and to focus their energies on their studies rather than on the escalating cost of higher education and living expenses.
Responding to this need, the LCC established three full tuition scholarships for those students who best combine academic excellence and leadership with international awareness and cross cultural understanding.
The Joyce Merrill Valdes, the Joseph O. Davidson, and the Brad Leon Powell scholarships cover the full cost of tuition, fees, and medical insurance (currently valued at $4,293.00).
The Joyce Merrill Valdes scholarship honors Professor Joyce Merrill Valdes, who was the founder and first director of the Language and Culture Center; the Joseph O. Davidson scholarship honors Dr. Joseph O. Davidson, who served as director of the Language and Culture Center for twenty-three years and retired from service on January 31, 2006; the Brad Leon Powell scholarship honors Brad Leon Powell, who was the Program Director for Counseling and Student Services and served as a dedicated member of the Language and Culture Center since 2002. Joyce Valdes, Joseph Davidson, and Brad Powell committed their professional careers to cross-cultural understanding and international educational exchange. Each scholarship is for one term of study in the intensive English program.
Only current Language and Culture Center students may apply for these scholarships.
Over the years, well deserving scholarship recipients have come from countries on five continents (Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America).
Establishing a Legacy of Scholarship Support
With the Valdes, Davidson, and Powell scholarships, the Language and Culture Center has established a tradition of scholarship support that has benefited many worthy students. We invite private donors to contribute to this legacy. Your endowed or non-endowed gift will enable qualified Language and Culture Center students to acquire the English language and cross cultural communication skills they need to meet the challenges of a global marketplace.
We hope you will be a part of our future.
