Nathan Shepley's specialization area is Rhetoric, Composition, and Pedagogy. He studies composition history, examining how narratives of composition emerge from researchers' source types, theoretical orientations, and allegiances to physical and social spaces, complete with the normative baggage that those spaces accrue. Related to this historical work is his interest in place-based writing, specifically regarding how college student writers use locations to form geographically sophisticated identities. His articles or reviews have appeared in Composition Studies and IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication. Currently, he is exploring methodological and theoretical challenges of linking local histories of composition, and he is studying the role of college-level writing opportunities in Appalachia and in south Texas to foster local identification and commitment.
