Awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities

Professor Young

Please join us in congratulating Professors Nancy Beck Young and Leandra Zarnow. They have been awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to host a summer seminar for college professors in June 2017, “Gender, Party Politics, and the State.” Working in conjunction with the Center for Public History, they will bring sixteen college professors to campus next summer for a week of intensive study. Young and Zarnow are using the 1977 National Women’s Conference, held in Houston, to analyze why the 1970s should be viewed as a “pivotal,” transformative decade that bridges midcentury liberalism and modern conservatism. Using gender policy as a focal point, seminar participants will consider the points of connection and contestation that makes U.S. democracy unique. The seminar is designed to bring into conversation a broad range of political, legal, economic, and socio-cultural historiography.

Professor ZarnowKey questions guiding the seminar include the following: How and why did the feminist movement and party politics converge in the 1970s and result in a National Women’s Convention? They ask how the politics of scarcity constrained presidential and legislative deliberation about women’s issues. The seminar hones in on questions of representation. How and why did the NWC become a lightening rod for the most intractable debates about representation? Who should and should not have a voice in government? How and why did “family values” become a cleavage issue in modern American politics?

Hosting this NEH Seminar is a major coup for the University and department. Congratulations to Professors Zarnow and Young for this important accomplishment.

We are now inviting applications from all college and university educators to “Gender, the State, and the 1977 International Women’s Year Conference,” to be held on the University of Houston, main campus June 12-18, 2017. A stipend (taxable) will be provided to each selected Summer Scholar.

The deadline for applications is March 1, 2017. Notification letters for all applicants will be sent via email by March 31, 2017.
